Preliminary Finals

And then there were 5....

In what turned out to be a special day for Quake, the Campbelltown club will contest 5 of the 8 Grand Finals this Saturday, yet another Club record in a season to remember.

After a valiant Men’s outfit lost in week 2 of the final series, only the 12 girls lost their Preliminary final on a day the “purple and orange” dominated.

12 Girls - Quake 2 (Rosie Galea, Savannah Greenwood) – Mascot 3

After last week’s victory over Dural, our youngest girls had the difficult task of playing against a team that finished some 15 points better that our girls. But on the day, you would not have known that fact, with the team playing well above their weight. They found themselves down 2-0 after some 11 minutes, but they fought hard against a more physical opposition. Rosie made it 2-1 to take us to the break with a hope of a comeback. Unfortunately, another Vipers strike made it 3-1. Savannah gave us hope with 9 minutes to go, but unfortunately our ladies could not do it, and so their season ends. They have had a sensational season and are a credit to the Club. Congrats to Leesa and the team, you have made us proud.

14 Boys – Quake 6 (Lachlan Roberts 3, Liam McGing, Trent Sierra, Anthony Haddad) – SCE 3

Our first team in the Grand Final! High drama in this one against rivals Sydney City Eagles with, amazingly, the rain playing a part in the game. It all started well with a fired up Quake outfit scoring first via Liam McGing. However, 15 minutes in and some good ball movement by the Eagles found the equaliser. However, 2 minutes later a nice one-two found Anthony free to put Quake ahead. A minute later, a long ball from Conor Irwin found Lachlan Roberts free to make it 3-1.   Impressively, within the first 10 minutes of the second half, Trent made it 4-1 and then Lachlan scored his second from a good counter attack. Lach then completed his hat-trick off a corner and Quake was cruising at 6-1. But with 7:30 minutes left on the clock, a severe storm hit Menai, causing the roof to leak. The refs stopped the game for some 10 minutes, with obvious concern for the safety of the players. When the game resumed, a fired-up Eagles scored twice but the good work had been done and Quake had won a spot in the decider. The match against Inner West will be a tough one and it will need for Quake to be at their best.

14 Girls – Quake 2 (Melissa Walsh, Jemma Crane) – Enfield 1

This was a good performance from our girls who have booked themselves a spot in the big one. With just 5 minutes played, Mel Walsh capitalised from an error by the Enfield defence to open the scoring and the only goal of the first half. It was Jemma who finished a good move to double the advantage for Quake with some 9 minutes to go. However, with just a minute to the end, Rovers scored to send some nerves to the Quake faithful. The girls held on for the win, with Chloe Gray outstanding in the Quake goal. They now meet Inner West in what promises to be an outstanding clash.

16 Boys – Quake 6 (Bruno Antelmi 3, Danny Araujo, Nico Ortega, Matias Da Silva Santos) – Sydney City Eagles 3

What a game! Both teams made this a memorable game as a super start by the Eagles was cancelled out by a superb comeback by Campbelltown. The Eagles started with Calver scoring in the 3^rd minute to give Sydney City the lead. In the 6^th minute, Calver scored his second, but when Arias scored in the 8^th minute to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead, a stunned Quake outfit needed something special to get out of this one. A well called time-out (the conversation is now classified) worked a treat, with Mati scoring off Bruno. On 17^th minute, Bruno made it 2-3, which was the half-time score. The Quake second half was incredible, with the Campbelltown team scoring 4 unanswered goals to book a place in the decider. First it was Nico (2^nd minute) who scored a bomb from distance. Danny scored just a minute later, with Bruno netting his second with just 10 minuted to go. The final 10 minutes was heated, but when Bruno scored his third from the 10m spot, the job was done. Enfield Rovers await the premiers in the Grand Final, in what could be the match of the day.

Youth Men – Quake 7 (Harley Da Silva 3, Matt Trotter, Tom Herceg, Jake McGing and Andrew Haim) – Vipers 0

It took their best display of the season to book the Youth Men a spot in the decider against the classy Dural. Within the first minute, Harley got the scoring going to settle the nerves of the large crowd. He got his second with 3 minutes to go to send the teams to the break at 2-0. Matt Trotter got Quake’s third and when Tom Herceg scored just a minute later, the game was won. With Vipers desperate for a goal, the 5^th man tactic wad deployed, allowing Andrew Haim to score from his own goal to send crowd into raptures. Jake got Quake’s 6^th and when Harley got his hat trick, the 7-0 win was their best of the season. The Dural game will be tough, but in their current form, the Campbelltown boys can do anything.

Women – Quake 1 (Stephanie Haim) – Enfield 0

Another drama-filled thriller to end the day was supplied by these two even teams. With Rovers (the Premiers) losing last week to second placed Eagles, it was 1^st v 3^rd to find Sydney City’s opponent. The game was even, with neither team able to assert their authority. Each team had their fair share of chances, but unable to convert. Enfield had a wonderful opportunity with 10 minutes to go, and was brilliantly saved off the line by Stephanie Haim (with her face!). It took 45 minutes before the only goal of the game was scored. A hand ball outside the D gave Quake the opportunity. Dolly dummied, went over the ball and Steph drilled the ball passed Tani in the Rovers goal. So finally, Quake makes another Grand Final against arch-rival Sydney City. Can they revenge the previous 2 Grand Finals? We will have to wait until the week end to find out.
