Promising Start To The Season

Match Reports – Sunday 25th September

On a cold and wet Minto Sunday, Quake kicked off the new Premier League Season with 6 victories and 18 points from the 9 matches played. Whilst the weather was cold, the action on the field was far from that.

12 Boys – Quake 1 (Harlan Sparkes) – Dural 11

Quake met a very well organised Dural team and were beaten but not disgraced. In patches, Quake showed good signs, but were unable to match it with the Warriors for the full 40 minutes. The score blew out towards the end. The Quake boys must now turn their thoughts to the next training session and their next match against Enfield.

12 Girls – Quake 1 (Savanna Greenwood) – Dural 5

Not unlike the 12 boys, our young girls kicked off their campaign against a very good Warriors outfit. Our girls had chances but were well beaten in the end.

14 Girls – Quake 6 ( Jemma Crane 2, Ruby Mosca 2, Ashlee Norman 1) – Dural 0

On their way to the Football State Titles, our girls were very good in defeating Dural. With 3 goals in each half, Quake started the season with a convincing victory. Whilst the entire team played well, Jemma Crane was outstanding with the running and 2 goals.

14 Boys – Quake 9 ( Lachlan Roberts 4, Anthony Haddad 3, Trent Sierra, Luke Pereira) – Dural 1

This was a very impressive performance from a team who “snuck in under the radar”. Not too many people were expecting this result against a well coached Dural outfit. With Lachlan and Anthony scoring multiple goals, and the entire team contributing, Coach James Gilligan had plenty to smile about. It is early days in this very competitive age group, but a good start is pleasing.

16 Boys – Quake 3 (Shaun Irwin, Jack Taseski, Bruno Antelmi) – Dural 1

This was a steady start from a team expected to figure in the finals. It was a convincing win after going down a goal in the first half. Even at the break, 2 quick goals in the second half sealed the win for 3 points. I am certain this team has plenty of improvement left in it as the season progresses.

16 Girls – Quake 2 ( Lucy Chapman, Kiralea Lowther) – Dural 1

This was one of the games of the day. Our girls kicked off the season with a well-fought win. Whilst the win was a team effort, there were 2 highlights in my opinion – the performance of Dana Buttigieg in goals (superb!) and the cracking goal by Lucy Chapman from long distance.

Youth Men – Quake 3 (Harley Da Silva, Matt Trotter, Daniel Vellonio) – Dural 1

This was without doubt the most anticipated match of the day. Two well coached teams with great players, a recipe for a great game which was exactly what we got. The pace was frantic and Quake got off to a great start when first Harley and then Trots gave Quake a 2 goal lead at the break. In his return game to Quake, Daniel Vellonio scored a third to seal a well deserved victory for this Youth team showing early promise.

Women – Quake 1 (Claire Walsh) – Dural 2

Heartbreak! It is the only way to describe this game for Quake. Not taking anything away from a good Dural team, Quake had every right to take all three points. With countless chances denied by Warriors GK Acevedo, Quake held a slim 1-nil lead into the final minute. In a mad last 60 seconds, Dural scored twice through Perrins and Cirjak to take the game from Quake.

Men – Quake 3 ( James Pearce, Gary Seymour, Harley Da Silva) – Dural 2

The highly fancied Warriors got off to a great start when in the 2nd minute Daine Merrin put Rob Varela’s team in the lead. Whilst the Quake team took a little time to adjust to the pace of the game, they equalised through a James Pearce long range shot. Quake took the lead on the stroke of half time when “Choppy” Seymour scored from a 10 meter penalty shot. In a very physical encounter, Quake scored a third when Youth player Harley Da Silva tapped in a clever flick from new recruit Damian Brosque. Dural persevered only to be denied by the brilliance of Gavin O’Brien in the Quake goal. However, in a goal mouth scramble, Corey Bizco scored for Dural to send us to nail-bitting final 8 minutes. In the end, Quake hung in to take all 3 points and end the day on a positive. Quake is away to Enfield Rovers on Saturday 1st October.
