PARENTS, COACHES & MANAGERS - ROLES & RESPONSIBILITES

Generals Basketball Club –  Parent, Coach and Team Manager Roles and Responsibilities.

As GBC continues to grow and develop it is becoming clear that some of our basic club values and expectations need to be reinforced to our members. GBC values the contribution made by all our parents, coaches and officials in the development of our children’s basketball, no matter how big or small that contribution is.

Parental Responsibility:

GBC expects parents to become as involved as they possibly can in their children’s basketball. These responsibilities include:-

  • taking on coaching and team manager roles where possible
  • ensuring your child has the correct game fee ready in the correct amount prior to the start of each game – note that it is NOT the manager’s responsibility to run around finding change for $50 notes or other for game fees. All game fees must be paid on the night of the game
  • scoring domestic games - scoring is easy and there are regular scoring classes held at the stadium - see sports office for details. The best way to learn to score is to get an experienced scorer to sit with you through 1 or 2 games. The expectation is that each player has at least one family member who is able to score regularly throughout the season
  • behaving responsibly at games and training sessions – abuse of players coaches or officials is not an option
  • supporting your coach and team manager by offering help as required, refraining from criticism, retaining an optimistic / positive attitude at all times.
  • supporting your children’s basketball by ensuring that your child is able to get to and from training and games in a timely manner. It is expected that someone is there to pick up your child at the designated completion times of games and training or alternative arrangements have been made
  • it is club recommendation that all players should be ready for each game at least 10 minutes prior to published start time – this allows coaches and team mangers to undertake their responsibilities in a reasonable manner and time frame
  • notification of any absence to games or training is considered a matter of courtesy to all other team members and should be done at all times as soon as the intended absence is recognised
  • ensuring that your child has access to adequate hydration for each game and training session (drink bottles or other).
  • It is recommended that where possible each child has their own ball to bring to training
  • promote good behaviour at all times by applauding both your own and opposition teams good play, supporting team officials and referees, refraining from any offensive behaviour and abiding by all rules

GBC expects each team to have a nominated coach and team manager (BBA insists that each team entry must have a nominated coach and manager).

Coaching Responsibility:

GBC will endeavour to find a suitable coach for every team – occasionally this cannot be done and it is expected that the coach must come from parent ranks. GBC will provide a training venue for all teams – it may also find a suitable training coach if required. GBC will also support (morally and financially) club members to develop as coaches through official coaching courses.

It is expected that the coach takes responsibility for the team for each game and provides an opportunity for each player to train at least once a week. Some teams may not train by consensus however if an individual player wishes to train then the coach should provide that opportunity by negotiating with another like team. The coach has absolute authority over the team during training and games. GBC has a policy of equal court time for each player in the domestic competitions and coaches are expected to abide by this policy. This policy does NOT pertain to ‘higher level’ tournaments such as Club Championships where Generals teams may compete.

The coach is also responsible for the on court behaviour of the players. GBC expects coaches and players to abide by all rules standards as provided in the handbooks supplied by the Sports Office. There should be no abuse of other players, referees or other designated officials. All individuals are expected to be treated responsibly and respectfully at all times. All disputes or objections should be managed through the appropriate channels.

Where the coach is another child (U18) then it is expected that they will be supported by the presence of a suitable adult at all times during training and games.

Team Managing Responsibility:

Every team must have a nominated team manager. The team manger is expected to be a responsible adult capable of independent actions.  GBC does not supply team managers – they are expected to come from within ranks of each team’s parents or contacts. Team mangers are expected to support the coach and undertake the administrative functions of the team.

On a weekly game basis this includes:-

1/. Ensuring that the team scoresheet is filled out correctly in time for the game and the team has a scorer. From a club perspective every parent/guardian is expected to be able to score a domestic game. The team manager is NOT expected to score each game, but merely ensure a scorer is present. This may be done by way of a roster if required.

2/. Collecting game fees and paying them in at the sports office.

3/. Ensuring the behaviour of the team as a whole is adequate. This includes the behaviour of the coach, the players and associated team supporters. Expected standards of behaviour can be found in the handbooks available from the Sports Office. Often teams may have older children coaching them. It especially incumbent on the team manager that, in these cases, the coach is fully supported and protected from internal or external criticism or unnecessary comment or manipulation by others.

4/. Where the coach is a child (U18) it is expected that the team manager will organise the support of suitable adult to be present at all times during training and games. This does not necessarily have to be the same adult each time.

On a seasonal basis the team manager should look to organise a small present for the coach and maybe an end of season break-up for the team.
