Creating Jobs and Building Social Capital:
AFL in Greater Western Sydney
Andrew Demetriou
CEO, Australian Football League
The AFL’s expansion plans in Greater Western Sydney (GWS) have stirred imaginations and stimulated much discussion throughout the nation. This WSBC gathering will be a landmark event in the sports industry of NSW.
At the new $27.5 million AFL/Cricket stadium at Blacktown Olympic Park, Andrew Demetriou will speak on:
• key components of the AFL’s plans for the new Western Sydney Team
• employment, economic and commercial opportunities that will be created by the initiative and
• how an AFL Club will benefit the local communities across GWS though Indigenous Academies, multicultural programs, education and health related initiatives.
Come and witness the new Club’s future stars perform in front of AFL Club talent scouts on Day-1 of the NAB AFL U/16 National Championships.
Australian football currently attracts more than 600,000 participants and over 7 million spectators per year. More than 4.5 million people watch AFL on TV each week. The code supports a $3.3 billion industry, with some 9,500 full-time equivalent jobs. It is played by more than 11,600 teams representing more than 2,500 community clubs supported by 100,000 volunteers throughout Australia each week.
Andrew Demetriou has had vast experience in growing businesses. He is also Public Appeal Chairman for the Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre, a member of the National Australia Bank’s Community Advisory Council and is Chairman of the Australian Government’s Multicultural Advisory Council.
