Match Reports
Under 12's Black by Glen Stevens
This week the Lions played the St.Clair Crows in yet another top of the table clash. With four regular players missing , the Lions were lucky enough to have Joel Batson, Nicholas Hocking, Matthew McAlpine & Matthew Holburn from U/12 White step in to fill the void in this important match.
The Lions got off to a slow & nervous start and if not for Brody Swarbrick, Bryden Filce & the rest of the Lions defence, could have been trailing by more than the 14 point margin on the board at quarter time.
¼ time: Lions 0.1.1 to Crows 2.3.15
The work rate of the Lions lifted in the second quarter enabling them to claw their way back into the game. A determined Bryony Corless stamped her authority on the game with two beautiful goals and also had a hand in setting up Nicholas Hocking for another Lions goal. Bryden Filce was again fantastic playing in an unfamiliar position at full back where he took a number of marks on the last line of defence. Brayden Saint Barry was getting on top in the ruck allowing the Lions centre group of Jake Stevens, Joel Walsh & Mitch Andrews to continually drive the Lions forward while Tyler Robinson, Matthew McAlpine & Tiarne Kerr were fantastic around the base of the packs.
½ time: Lions 3.7.25 to Crows 3.4.22
The third quarter was another even contest, however the Lions were able to outscore their opponents 2 goals to 1 with the Lions goals being scored by Brayden Saint Barry and Jake Stevens. After a number of positional changes Joel Batson found himself at full back, a position which he controlled with some great marks and at times beating 2 opponents on his own.
¾ time: Lions 5.7.37 to Crows 4.4.28
Taking a 9 point lead into the last quarter the Lions were keen to quickly put the determined Crows away. After a quick goal to Brayden within the first minute. A reply from the Crows then saw Lachlan Corbett breaking through a pack to kick his first for the day and another one to Nicholas Hocking seal the game for the proud Lions.
Final Score: Lions 8.11.59 def Crows 54.34

Under 16's by Paul Hocking
With Dukes Oval out of action for the older grades and the Shaw Park transformation not quite finished, the Lions played their “home” game at Greygums Oval against the only side they haven’t beaten to date – the St Clair Crows. With Jordan, Blake, Rick, Dylan, and Alex Wade all out, the Lions welcomed newly registered player Ashley Nicholls, and from the 14’s we had, Adrian Boelhower, Jeremy Rix, Chris Nolan and Blake Langer. We welcomed back Geoff Noble to the flag waving role while Mr Perpetual Motion – Paul Devlin ran the boundary for both sides – literally! Bob Mitchell was ably assisted by Pat Pope from the 14’s in the flouro runner’s shirts while coaches Stevens and Rix controlled the positional board (our 24 against their 25) and tried to fire up the team to maintain their winning ways.
The first quarter saw the Lions begin well with the ball down in their attacking half for at least the first 5 minutes of the game. From the pressure, Brayden broke free and kicked long to David L. who marked at the top of the goal square to register our first goal. Brayden did it again as he bombed long to the goal square for Michael to kick his opening goal. Some unlucky bounces of the ball (for the Lions) saw the Crows respond with a goal. With some assistance from some calls from the officials, the Crows scored again, and the Lions knew they were in a close game. Jackson from the centre, kicked long to Ben who kicked to the goal square. In a tussle for the ball, Michael snapped to get his 2nd goal for the quarter. The Lions went into the first break 3 – 5 – 23 to 2 – 0 – 12.
The second quarter was a slow start for the Lions as the Crows moved the ball out of the centre quickly for 2 more goals to take the lead. Ash who had played a good game on the wing was replaced as he had to go off to another commitment. But it wasn’t before he sent the ball on to Ben who kicked to the pocket for Nick to try and score under pressure. He lobbed it across the face of goals for Alex to pick up and run around to snap his first goal. Attacking the far wing again, the ball ended up in the forward pocket for the Lions again with Tom roving well and kicking a good goal over his fathers head. Some lucky bounces and again with some free kicks from the officials, the Crows kicked the next 2 goals. Finally with some lucky bounces for the Lions, Dan Kelly was the last player left standing for his first goal and the Lions went to the long break with a slender lead; 6 – 6 – 42 to the Crows 6 – 0 – 36.
The first goal of the third quarter went to the Crows but then the pressure of the Lions in their forward 50 started to show. From a kick out after another rushed behind, Ben started to fire and took a great overhead mark. He calmly kicked long, back over the fullback’s head, to score his first goal of the game. He took another good mark from a kick out a few minutes later and then kicked long for David L to take an easy chest mark at the top of the square. David goaled and the game seemingly was heading the Lions way. But then a few more calls from the officials saw the Crows score again and the Lions dugout and fans were getting very frustrated. The Lions lifted and following some pressure from our forwards, Ben kicked his second and third goals of the quarter for the Lions to lead into the final break 10 – 10 – 70 to the Crowes 8 – 1 – 49.
Following a call to play this fourth quarter like they had in the last 4 weeks, the Lions lifted strongly and really took it to the Crows in the fight for the ball. Jackson won a 50m penalty and goaled from 5m out to ram the advantage home. Michael scored a goal after he played on from a long pass and then he scored again after Ben sent the ball long to the pocket for Michael to snap his fourth goal. From a ball up about 10 metres out from the Lions Goal, Ben roved with great skill to dribble the ball between the big sticks and then a little later he kicked his 5th goal of the day again after playing on. After some good work from Alex H. and Grant on our left forward line, Grant ran away to an open goal to score his first goal of the game. The Crows finally got on to the board for the quarter but by then coaches Rix and Stevens were swapping their large bench around so everybody was getting a go. In a remarkable long run, Shaun kicked long to the centre and then kept running to receive a pass from Ben to kick his first goal from 30 metres out. Only the siren stopped the scoring for the Lions as they ran away with the game 17 – 11 – 113 to the Crows 9 – 3 – 57.
Sam Devlin who had a wow of a game in defence was named man of the match followed closely by Ben McGovern who had a great 2nd half. Other players to get a mention for good games were Braydon Wilson, Luke Crebbin, Adrian from the 14’s and Michael Kerr. It was another satisfying win from a team that has finally learnt how to put away their opposition. We now have 2 weeks of training including a combined training run with the Under18 Rams at Dukes this Wednesday. Following next weekend off we return to Greygums Oval for a return match against the Penrith Swans who were annihilating the Kangaroos as we left. We look forward to your support again in our run home to the finals.
