Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions scored the perfect record when all four competing teams found themselves at the right end of the scoreboard on Saturday. The Under 10's and 12's scored a double at the expense of a valiant Rooty Hill Power whilst the 14's and 16's travelled to the highlands and came back with the scalps of Wollondilly and Razorbacks.
The Under 10's were the first event on the card at Cook Park and unfortunately Rooty Hill did not have the numbers to formally run a team so the Lions took the match on forfeit. However, a social match was arranged and Zeoana McDonagh, coach of the Lions, sent four of the Lions best over to the power which resulted in an even match. The Lions playing for the Power should be congratulated for their great sportmanship in helping steer the Rooty Hill team to "victory" in a match that will prove beneficial to both the Lions and the young Rooty Hill Outfit.
The Under 12's match followed against the Power and it was the Lions who dominated the match with a comprehensive win. With the Mercy Rule being enforced at the half-time break, both clubs enjoyed a more even second half when players were swapped around. Congratulations to the young Lions on their effort and a special mention to Morgan Pollock and Beau Dingemans on their selection in the Sydney West Rep team announced during the week.
Although reports on the 14's and 16's match played at Bargo are sparse, a report coming through the telex machine claimed both had easy wins. Full reports will become available when the Cobb & Co coach arrives from Bargo in the next few days
Under 14's Match report
What a lovely drive it was to Bargo this week for the Lions on what appeared to be a beautiful sunny day. All thoughts of a perfect day for football disappeared as the Lions stepped out of their cars at Bargo to be greeted by the icy cold wind which would make life difficult for them for the rest of the day. The first quarter saw the start of a tough game of football with the Wollondilly Redbacks providing a very physical game from the outset. It took the young Lions some time to adjust but by the end of the quarter they had 2 goals on the scoreboard. The Lions started to open up the game in the second quarter moving the ball freely through the open spaces on the far side of the ground. Nathan Milgate played the game of his life in defence repelling the Wollondilly attack on several occasions. Mark Myhill was also dominant at full back and helped to keep the Redbacks scoreless in the first half. Chris Broderick played an outstanding game at centre half back, was instrumental in getting the ball out of the packs, made a couple of great tackles and really seemed to enjoy the physical nature of the game, crashing through the packs. The Redbacks came out fighting in the third quarter and with some hard work managed to kick 2 goals and keep the Lions goalless. But the Lions were not finished yet and came out in the last quarter and played a bit smarter and used the open spaces on the far side of the ground which resulted in 2 more goals. Stephen Dixon played a great game for the Lions and finished with 2 goals for the day. Michael Kerr was also busy around the ground and collected 2 goals for the day. Hugh Arnold was very impressive this week and made great use of the space on the far side of the ground, at one stage running and taking a bounce and delivering the ball accurately to his teammate further up the ground. The centerline was important with Pat Pope, Chris Nolan and Martin Pope combining well to link with the Lions defence and deliver the ball into the forward line. David Looyschelder played another solid game in the ruck and showed his versatility with some time on the wing this week where he also played well. Overall, it was an ugly game of football in difficult conditions but the Lions never gave up and at the end of the day got the result they wanted and made the trip to Bargo worthwhile. Awards: Chris Broderick (Dinos) David Looyschelder (Dominos), Nathan Milgate, Hugh Arnold Goals: Stephen Dixon 2, Michael Kerr 2, Pat Pope 1, Chris Nolan 1
