What a weekend of footy!
On the field
- The big news is the outstanding result for our U12 Blue team, who managed a great win over Muswellbrook to secure the U12 Premiership for 2012.
Due to playing in separate conferences, Muswellbrook and City Blues had not played each other all year, so the tension before the game was palpable.
Guided by Michael Foster's outstanding coaching, the City boys played a great Grand Final to top off a successful year.
Man of the match went to City ruckman Ethan Hicks, who seemed to be involved in every passage of play for the game.
We must congratulate Muswellbrook on their season under coach Adam Warner. This is the first time Muswellbrook has had a junior team in a grand final.
Muswellbrook plays a great style of football and if they kicked straighter, the result might have been a lot closer.
Final Scores were: Newcastle Blue 8 7 55 def Muswellbrook 1 9 15
Results from the other Grand Finals games at Number One yesterday:
U14: Cardiff 13 12 90 def Warners Bay 2 1 13
U16: Nelson Bay 11 8 74 def Bay Dockers 11 6 72 (yes it was a nail-biter!)
- On Friday Night, we had perfect conditions at Number One for the U10 end of season Gala Night. This was a first for the region, with Number One Divided into 3 three fields, and 9 teams participating over the night.
It was a fantastic spectacle and the canteen and gate for the night were both healthy.
- On Saturday, the Newcastle City Premier Division Team had the wind and rain work against them. In a game with a howling southerly creating a 5 goal breeze, Saturday night's rain storm arrived just before the three-quarter time break.
This made scoring almost impossible in the last quarter, and stopped City taking their turn with the wind at their backs. "That's footy" as they say and the the Premier Division Boys couldn't make it to a 5th consecutive Grand Final.
The City boys have been Premiers for the last four seasons, and that is a feat that hasn't been achieved in a long, long time. Congratulations boys. We look forward to seeing you in 2013.
Off the field
- At Saturday's senior finals canteen we turned over about 30% more than we did the previous Saturday! We had outstanding helpers doing a great job in the canteen and on the BBQ.
- This Saturday, 8th September we will be running the canteen for the senior grand finals. The weather forecast looks great, so based on previous years, we expect to be twice as busy as we were this week.
We will be running two BBQ's so if you are handy with the tongs, please come on down.
