The Fitzroy Stars Football Club (FSFC) joined the Northern Football League in 2008 after 13 years in the football wilderness.
The Darebin City Council assisted the FSFC to negotiate Crispe Park, Bill Lawry Oval and Preston City Oval for home games in season 2008. The FSFC would also thank Preston RSL Youth Club for use of Ruthven Reserve as our training venue. The Aboriginal Advancement League helped to resurrect the FSFC and Oxfam supported the club to raise awareness of the Close The Gap campaign.
It’s fantastic to see the FSFC back in action. The FSFC is based in the Aboriginal community in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The club was formed in the early 1970’s. The FSFC became an integral part of the way people spent their weekends, giving families a place where they could participate in sport. The occasion became an important weekly meeting place.
The FSFC has played in the Metropolitan Football League, National YCW Football League and Northern Metropolitan Football League as well as the Melbourne North Football League which they helped form in the late 1980’s. Their activity interrupted only by the collapse of these leagues. The FSFC had considerable success, competing in finals on a regular basis and winning premierships in 1977, 1985, 1989, 1990 and 1992. The FSFC has been the most successful side in the Victorian Aboriginal Youth Sport and Recreation (VAYSAR) Statewide Football Carnival, winning half the carnivals over the last 25 years.
Fitzroy Stars players also make up a high proportion of the Victorian Aboriginal State Team that competes at the National Aboriginal Football Carnival.
The mission of the Fitzroy Stars Football Club is not just about football. The club’s mission is to:
- Nurture a culture that promotes a healthy lifestyle
- Promote fitness, nutrition, diet, self-esteem
- Offer pathways to employment and education
- Foster reconciliation by building strong bridges between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities.
Fitzroy Stars has also been privileged in being profiled by Message Stick on ABC
