“When the younger generation seems to step over the wall of the old generation, it's rarely ever because they surpassed them. It's usually because the old generation took a step back and decided let the youngsters steal the show.”
Lionel Suggs
And so it was last Saturday for West first home game against Lower Plenty, when three generations of the Lang Family gathered to watch Peter and Lynnette sons Kirk and Troy played their first ever senior game together. The occasion was made more special by the presence of Peter’s brother David, and the head of the family, Jack.
Life circumstances have seen individual Lang family members navigate the day to day rigor of the world, including managing a large company, playing in the VFL with Werribee, and responding to health issues that present in our lives. But, on Saturday it was time to remain in the moment, and enjoy the most important thing in life: family.
After coming across from Avondale Heights this year, young Trent has worked extremely hard during preseason , and was deservedly chosen for his first game of senior footy.
With Kirk being available to play from Werribee, this meant that the boys would play together for the very first time.
Jack made the long trip from Chelsea (courtesy of the boy’s uncle David) for what turned out to be a great day for the family.
Trent & Kirk both played their junior footy at Lancefield after moving over with family from South Australia in 2000.
Kirk then played for Assumption College and Avondale Heights while also at Werribee in the VFL.
Xavier Clarke was the main conduit in being able to entice Kirk to be aligned with West last season.
Trent also found his way to Avondale and played in their 18’s until coming over to West this season.
The boys acquitted themselves very well, and were strong contributors to a comprehensive win over an opposition that has troubled us over the years.
It was great for the Family and the club that the boys were able to play together in a very solid win against Lower Plenty last week.
We hope that they are able to share many more great times together at West Preston Lakeside.
Sitting in the club rooms observing the interactions of the boys and their guardians, it struck me as strong collaboration between older and younger generations that combined both strength with wisdom—a surefire way to build competent, capable and considerate individuals. The Lang boys are all of that.
