One person’s challenge, can be one person’s opportunity
People who were at the game last Saturday learnt a lot about the WPLFC of 2013.
The U/19’s were involved in an inspirational win, getting over a well drilled Bundoora side. With an ever changing list from week to week, the team worked cohesively under pressure to get a great outcome.
The seconds, a team that has been decimated by injury, was topped up with both under 16’s and U19’s players (who had played in the previous game).
With wind conditions presenting their fair share of challenges, effort rather than skill was going to be the order of the day. Though the side was eventually comprehensively beaten, in was mainly the “blow-out” in the last quarter that sort to mask what was a very gallant and workmen like performance against a high quality opposition.
I ran into snr coach Frank Raso walking the boundary in the last term of the U/19’s. I asked him whether the boys in the ones were ready for the big clash. I didn’t realise that he was walking the boundary on a recruiting campaign.
Having lost 3 players from the snr side announced on Thursday night (two of these players pulled out on the morning of the game), Frank was “recruiting” an U/19 player from the ground to make up the numbers for the 2.00 game.
We discussed how one person’s challenge, can be one person’s opportunity, and so those given the chance due to unforeseen circumstances have been given an opportunity make their mark.
This philosophy has been the mantra of the club throughout this whole 2013 season.
In 2013, with a significant changing of the guard both on and off the field, the WPLFC could have viewed the situation two ways, as a challenge, or an opportunity. Such is the resolve of the place, and the individuals who make up this great club, we chose the latter.
Never has this attitude been tested more on the public arena, than the 2.00 clash against Bundoora FC last Saturday. Bundoora are a great side / great club, and have been the bench mark of the completion for a long time.
On Saturday, to the snrs team’s credit, a challenge was viewed as an opportunity to test our worth.
I believe you will find out the real quality of any relationships, when people are placed under duress, not when everybody is “kicking with the wind”. The snr side demonstrated a commitment to look after their own, with everybody doing the “heavy lifting” on the day.
Last Saturday the WPLFC of 2013 had an opportunity to test the relationships of all coaches, players and supporters. Just as we had suspected, we look after our own.
