SENIORS
The rain kept falling during the week which meant that the ground was very wet and muddy yesterday. Watsonia adjusted to the conditions better than the Redbacks and although goals went both ways throughout the first quarter the visitors held the advantage at the first break. With Redbacks senior coach Dean Haydock looking to build intensity heading towards the finals the players received a rare but deserved blast at quarter time. It worked. From there The Hills started to spit the ball out from the packs and move the ball from the backline to the forwards via Tristan Kreymborg taking plrnty of marks around the ground, Rob Guest playing another solid role off half back and Benn Parker running with the ball to break tackles. Ryan Byrne and Brett Thorn picked up numerous possessions across the half forward line and slotted a couple of goals each. Joffa Byron managed 5 majors to bring his tally to 90 for the season. However, best on ground for the home side was Kane Gilmore who played a tagging role and once again did exactly what the coach had asked. A further hitout against Heidelberg West next week in front of a home crowd and then the real business starts.
RESERVES
The Reserves got the best of the conditions before the ground got too chopped up, but it was still a hard slog all day. The small guys did most of the heavy work to move the ball forward including Brett Aldred in another best on ground effort, Shane Price and Kelley Le Gassick. Meanwhile, the taller backline players including Jack Le Gassick, Andrew Schadendorff and Andrew Boyle did their job to prevent too many Watsonia goals. Winning form is good form, and the Reserves are winning at the right time of the season.
