Seniors:
Round 7 saw second last team Thomastown take on the bottom placed Mernda 2 meet at Main St Reserve on another wet Saturday afternoon to see who could put some breathing space between the other side. Thomastown had four changes with Jason Abela playing his first game for the year, Chris Horman & Sash Spiroski returning from injury and Dom Mazza back from the Reserve’s. Michael DiBattista and Assad Seeman went out through injury and Nicholas Horman moving back to WA and Milad Zakkour moving on went out of the team.
In pretty heavy conditions Mernda were trying to make the most of the dry ball and were moving it quickly through the mid field to try to penetrate the Thomastown defence. Calafiore opened the scoring for the Bears with a goal from about 40 metres out. Mernda responded before two goals to Meade allowed Thomastown to go into the break with a 10 point lead.
The second quarter saw neither side able to gain the ascendency with a goal each early in the term. Mernda were able to kick consecutive goals to take the lead 20 minutes into the quarter until Thomastown were able to reply with two goals of their own to go in at half time with an 8 point lead.
In the third quarter Thomastown were able to break the match open and were able to kick 5 goals while keeping Mernda goal less for the term to go in at three quarter time leading by 36 points. The final quarter was a struggle in the trying conditions with Thomastown adding a further two goals to Mernda’s one to record their first victory for the season by 45 points.
