DEMONS HANG ON FOR THIRD WIN
The seniors recorded their third win of the season, holding off a late challenge from a fast finishing Tooronga Malvern.
We jumped out of the blocks posted the first four goals of the match. Trevor Kumetaits was on fire with two goals in the first term, Brad Scott and Danny McKee also registered majors in the first quarter, whilst Brad Heuvel couldn’t finish off some good work from Waata and Danny McKee just before the first break,
A four goal margin was probably not enough reward for the way we played in the first quarter, but a couple of missed opportunities were responsible.
The home side rallied in the second term to get the flow of the game back on level terms. A good left foot centre from Jay Piggin allowed Josh Pierpoint to mark in front and convert. This was followed by a little Vassallo magic to get a goal from nothing. The half time margin was the same as at quarter time.
The third quarter opened up with Gav again goaling early. Things appeared to be going well when Brad Heuvel goaled with a right foot snap. In his 17 year career at the club, this is his only documented right foot kick. Well done Brad. A 35 point lead at the last break seemed a safe margin,
The home side however would not be denied. With a slight breeze at their back it seemed they could do know wrong. Two disastrous attempts to switch play late in the last resulted in goals to the bad guys, with the margin whittled down to four points. Just when it appeared that we would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, Trevor goaled after some terrific hustle from Luke Swan kept the ball alive in our forward line. When Heuvs read the floating ball better than rest a minute later and converted, the game was ours.
Luke Swan was terrific all day and was well supported by Jay Piggin who showed plenty of dash. John McMurray and Mark Charles led the backline whilst Adam Nichols was also good.
The reserves recorded a comfortable victory, leading all day. Some familiar names among the best including Paul Murphy and John Charles. Steve Aitken and Neil Sjostrom were again among the better players.
