The season kicked of in style Friday night with a well earned victory over Clayton.
Three first quarter goals to Gav Vassallo set the tone for the evening with the lads going to the first break with a handy margin. New full forward Josh Pierpoint was presenting well up forward, and would have enjoyed the supply from the likes of Nigel Scott, Leighton Ross and Ryan Forsyth. At the other end John McMurray was given the task on Clayton's dangerous coach and was on top with assistance from the likes of Pat Ryan and Tim Beech.
New ruckman Perry Todd was giving his underlings an armchair ride and gave a glimpse of the value he will be this year. Possibly the story of the night was Matt Sheahan on the wing. Returning to club after a lengthy absence, he was in sensational form, adjudged BOG by the match committee.
The Clays however would not be denied and rallied in the third term to be well in the game when the oranges were handed out. After a bit of argy bargy early in the final stanza, it was the good guys who steadied the better, running out 43 point winners. Gav finished the night with 5, Josh with three and three goals to Trevor Kumetaitis on debut. Overall a pleasing effort.
The reserves romped home for new coach Pat Hill on Saturday morning. With an experienced side boasting a total of 6 senior best and fairests, the Clays were never in the hunt. Solid contributions by Kris Thompson, Matt Pay and Matt Grassham were well finished off up forward. Paul Sjostrom finished with 6, Paul Riley 5, with 4 each to Mark Riley and Sang.
