In what is one of the toughest tests in SFL football, the boys ventured to St. Kilda City's peanut farm on Saturday with the hopes of causing a major upset. With Willow falling through a roof last week (Feel sorry for the roof), and Charlesy a late withdrawal, our forward line was not as prominant as what we had hoped throughout the week. Despite a positive feeling in the rooms prior to the game, the undefeated league ladders jumped out to an impressive start, leading by 41 points at the first break. The boys rallied in the second term, and for the best part of the second quarter, we had more of the ball but unfortunately couldn't capitalise on the efforts of our midfield by kicking straight.
Despite our efforts to be competitive in the 3rd quarter, the Saints ball use was too sharp, and they showed why they are now the benchmark of the competition. The last quarter was a step backwards and the lack of effort from most players to stem the flow was disappointing. Flea battled on for the duration of the games, Hally showed his adaptability by running hard in the ruck, and Scotty continued his excellent form with a solid 4 quarter performance. The positive to come out of this game was that for a twenty minute period in the second quarter, we not only matched it with the best, but we outplayed them. However games aren't won in twenty minutes and we need to concetrate harder at the task at hand, even when the legs start to get heavy. The responsibility is now on each of the Senior players to show some spirit and fight harder against another quality side next week in Cheltenham.
In the opener, despite a late charge from our reserves to get within a goal early in the last quarter, the Saints proved too strong and ran out comfortable winners. Once again we thank our fill-ins Nino, Special, Roge, Riles and Ballsy, quality people who show what a football club is all about. Thanks for giving up your Saturday for us on short notice boys.
