The lads narrowly failed to get the job done against Murrumbeena at the Beena arena . The slippery conditions made for a low scoring dour affair.
We started the better with early goals to Pete Heng (below), Ben Stacey, Dave Monaghan and Tristan Potts before the home side fought back late in the first quarter. We held on desperately in the second quarter as the Lions peppered the goals and took a thirteen-point lead into the main break.
Goals in the third term to Lachie Morrey, Ben Stacey and Peter Heng cut the margin to a solitary point. Matty Ork in the ruck was providing a great contest, and the backline led by Andrew Do held firm.
It was anyone’s game in a tense last term. The home side received two controversial frees that resulted in goals, crucial to the result as we went down by 5 points.
THe loss was made worse with what looks like a serious knee injury to skipper Steve Bagley in the third term. Get well soon Baggas.
Ben Stacey was manful in the ruck and on the ball, despite having to deal with a tag for the most of the day. Dave Monaghan was in terrific touch celebrating his birthday and Pete Heng and Glenn Rees adapted well to the conditions.
The reserves suffered a disappointing loss, going down by 17 points. Trailing by 5 points when the oranges appeared we were confident we could get the job done. The home side finished the better, slamming on 4 goals in the final stanza.
Chris Lacey and Dan Barret (2 goals each) rowed their side of the boat up forward. Jayden Dart played his best game for the club and was well supported by Mitch Latimer, Cam McLeod and Ritha Chan.
