We took on the promoted Doveton Eagles in perfect conditions at Newcomen Road on Saturday. It was a tough first quarter as our inspirational and durable skipper Gav Vassallo limped from the field and did no reappear for the day. Chris Mc Taggart was soon to join him meaning we were down to two on the pine.
Below: Brad Dight(3 goals) marks strongly
With some reshuffling required we got on the scoreboard thanks to a long bomb from Rob Johnston. Rob combined moments later to find Leighton Ross in space, who also kicked truly. The visitors also had their moments with some dangerous forwards. We went to the first break 6 points adrift.
David Ford contests.
We found our mojo in the second quarter with Danny Wilson giving us every chance in the ruck and Matt Thompson and Craig Keenan winning clearances. Brad Dight was providing a great target, snaring 3 goals and marking everything in his area. Tim Bacic kicked a classy running goal and Dylan Bramble converted from a set shot. With our defence a little better organised through Ben Laier and Justin Doust we were able to take a 20 point lead in to the main break.
Tim Bacic delivers
Dylan Bramble slotted his third and extended the lead seconds into the second half. We enjoyed a six goal quarter based on some hard running and good ball use. Ben Laier typified the effort, out running his opponent from half back to find space and kick a handy goal. Clint Brooks converted from a strong mark and Tim Bacic also hit the scoreboard again.
With the game ours for the keeping in the final quarter, the visitors discipline was tested and found wanting. Our focus on football and the ball led us to good win, even though we lost the final term. It was probably the result of the work we had done when the match was in the balance and the fact we were two men down for nearly the whole match.
It was a day where we had many contributors. Danny Wilson was outstanding in the ruck, Leighton Ross, Brad Dight and Dylan Bramble were productive up forward and Ben Laier terrific in defence. Rob Johnston was responsible for many scoring opportunities as he continually found the pill a little further up the ground than usual.
The reserves were again undermanned. Although we started brightly, it wasn’t sustained and we were well beaten.
