Springvale Districts were able to hang on and deny a fast finishing Oakleigh in a dour struggle at the Princes Highway Reserve. We kicked with the wind in the first quarter and were left to rue several missed chances, kicking 1 goal and 7 behinds for the quarter.
We made the most of our chances in the second quarter with Dylan Bramble kicking 2 of our four goals. Oakleigh also wasted some chances which saw us go to the main break with a 5 point lead.
A five goal to two third term saw us with a handy break when the oranges appeared. However the breeze was strengthening and the hosts were not out of it. Oakleigh kicked two goals in quick time at the start of the last to be within striking distance. We were forced to defend against a strong breeze for the rest of the match and were able to secure a 4 point victory.
The last quarter was a gutsy effort from our boys. We had guys out their feet that willed themselves to the next contest. We led all day and would have desperately unlucky to lose. With seven new faces in the side at the weekend, there is plenty of room from improvement. If we can produce the same effort week after week, we won’t be an easy side to play.
Dylan Bramble has a sensational game as a small forward kicking four goals. Danny Wilson was manful in the ruck whilst Jordan Wachter, Lance Baptist, Justin Doust and Brodie Snow on debut were among the best. Skipper Gav Vassallo kicked three goals and announced that he had changed his mind about retiring.
The reserves dominated from the opening bounce. Sean Francis ( 4 goals), Matt Pay (3) dominated the a scoreboard which featured 12 goalkickers for the demons. Ben Williams was named among the best in his return match along with Paul Norman, Chris Chalmers, Jamie Fox and Matt Devereaux on debut.
