Round 18 threw up no shortages of what if’s with different permutations meaning different finishing positions on the ladder. In the midst of all this we had almost forgotten that our number 1 priority was to win and not worry about the uncontrollable. Our meeting with Caulfield earlier this year saw us play the game almost entirely on our terms. It was a different story this week as they showed a great resolve and used the ball well. On the other hand we were tentative and overused the ball. We gave our forwards very little chance with some atrocious delivery. The coach was not best pleased at half time and made that pretty clear.
The half time spray produced a flurry of goals after the main break. Unfortunately they were all for Caulfield as we allowed 5 majors through for the quarter and went into the last quarter staring at a 14 point deficit. With our season on the line we finally got into gear. Some quick entries into the forward line finally gave the forwards a chance. Billy and Gav responded with 5 goals between them for the quarter. Ryan Wachter also nailed a crucial set shot to put visitors who could only manage a point in the final term.
It was far from our sharpest performance but the positives include taking the last quarter momentum into the finals. We were strongly challenged but didn’t panic and got the points.
Adam Nichols was at his best covering the ground. Billy and Gav were dangerous up forward whilst Rob Johnston, Jordan Wachter and Matt Thompson were also prominent.
Well done to the players and coaching staff on making the finals.
There is no limit to how far we can go.
