It was always going to be difficult assignment down at the hangar given our point victory over Skye in round one. The hosts were playing for their season and were always going to be fired up from the jump. We knew all this and were inexplicably not really for the heat that was there in the opening minutes of the contest. In the swimming terms, Skye had dived in head first, hit the wall and tumble turned whilst we were still putting our toes in checking the temperature.
On a heavy ground it was never going to pretty. Skye simply did the basics better than we did when the heat was on in the opening minutes. There were more Skye noses over the ball, more Skye jumpers at the contest and more Skye players first to the ball. The result was four unanswered goals time in quick and our team on the back foot. To the boys credit they were able to steady the ship and slow the scoring. The coach was within his right to be livid at quarter time and his plea for extra effort was warranted.
In truth, we paid a heavy price for 15 minutes of very poor football in the first quarter. The remainder of the match we competed well and probably weren’t rewarded for effort.
We broke even in the second quarter to go to the main break 25 points in arrears. Skye increased their lead marginally in the third term kicking to the scoring end. Unfortunately we were not able to make any ground in the last quarter and went down by thirty four points.
It was not a performance that we could be happy about but it will be a good lesson for our young charges. We must be ready for the contest and able to quickly adapt to less than perfect conditions.
David Monaghan was in good form on his wing and along with Gav Vassallo and David Ford was one of the few who were up for the challenge in the opening minutes. Danny Wilson battled well in the ruck against a good opponent, Justin Doust was very good when moved onto Skye’s Luke Mcguinnes and Matt Thompson worked very hard and got involved in the game.
The reserves were soundly beaten and had very few highlights. We are undermanned at this point in the season and full credit must go to the lads who are getting out there. The better players included Aiden Jolly, Jamie Fox, Tim Bacic, Luke Dovaston, Aaron Henderson and Dylan Bramble.
