A visit to the Bear Cave was the order of the day from Springvale on Saturday. We went into the long weekend with a lot of momentum and the challenge was to maintain that after the break. Our first quarter tackling and pressure showed the coaching staff that the weeks break had not diminished our hunger. It was forward pressure that bought the Bears undone and Gav and Flea pounced with early goals. We slammed on 6 goals in the first quarter which was a good reward for effort.
The Bears stemmed the flow of goals in the second term but couldn’t hurt us on the scoreboard. Damian Stoter-Rainer was in control on his wing and David Ford was providing a good target up forward, enabling us to take a five goal advantage to the main break. We extended our lead in the third term with goals to Leights and Fordy. The backline was providing a good springboard with Lance Baptist, Steve Bagley and Justin Doust well on top as a little bit of niggle came into the match.
We kept our discipline and focus on the ball and were rewarded by some good umpiring. The game was in our keeping at three quarter time. It was a little disappointing to narrowly lose the last quarter but we had made the running in the match and there was some junk time.
Gav Vassallo was named best in game number 100. Steve Bagley continued his rich vein of form as did Damian Stoter-Rainer, Adam Nichols, David Ford and Justin Doust.
The win puts us on top of the ladder. It was hard work to get there and will be twice as hard to stay there as we will be the hunted for the next 9 rounds. Our young group has met every challenge head on this year and will embrace this one.
The reserves kept their finals hopes alive with a blistering third quarter setting up a 76 point victory. Only a couple of kicks separated the teams at the main break. With a couple of injuries working against us, we piled on 8 goals in the third term and a further 5 in the final stanza as the hosts ran out of steam.
