It was a top of the table clash at Newcomen Rd on Saturday as we took one Mordialloc. The ground presented in terrific condition despite a Friday Night deluge.
Brendan Ashman got on the end of some fine work from Kris Merz to mark and goal early in the first quarter. Our intensity from the outset was first class and it reaped dividends with a second goal to Justin Doust soon after. Rob Johnston appeared to have our third shortly after, only to be denied by the goal umpire raising only one hand. The Bloods hit back through the aid of an unnecessary 50 metre penalty.

The second quarter continued the arm wrestle with both defences on top. Goals were hard to come by as the stoppage count climbed. It took something special from our champion captain Gav Vassallo to get us moving on the scoreboard. Our effort did not drop and we matched Mordialloc physically around the contest. We took the narrowest of leads into half time which was probably not adequate reward for our efforts.
Brendan Ashman kicked two goals.
There was more of the same in the third quarter as the arm wrestle continued .We were able pinch a couple of goals and take a 15 point lead into the main break- a handy lead in a low scoring affair.
We finished the better of the two teams to come away with a memorable and well deserved victory.
The coach’s message for the week was that we needed a contribution from everyone. It was delivered on the field with our best four quarter performance of sustained pressure and effort.
The backline of Lance, Leighton, Matty Blake, Steve Bagley, Ben Laier and Kris Thompson were superb as evidenced by Mordialloc kicking only one goal in the second half. Gav and Matty Thompson led from the front, with support from Dave Monaghan and Brendan Ashman. In under 11 parlance best players would have read – team effort

The reserves fell despairingly short, finishing three points adrift at the final siren. It was an arm wrestle all day where we let ourselves down for short periods. Tim Bacic had his best game for the club and nearly hung on to what could have been a match winning mark. Paul Norman made a strong return from injury whilst Brad Dight, Richard Gee and veteran Ash Beasy reminded the selectors that they are still around.
