Springvale Districts withstood a final quarter surge from Hampton to record a 15 point victory after a dour struggle at Newcomen Road.
We seemed to have the points well in the bag at three-quarter time holding a six goal lead. Given that the visitors had only kicked three goals to this point of the day we felt safe. Hampton however had other ideas and slammed on three very quick goals in the final stanza to get within striking distance. We were able to stop the rot and although we didn’t score ourselves we did enough to get points.
It was at times a scrappy affair as the visitors elected to play loose players behind the ball. Our patience was tested at times and decision making was not great. The abundance of loose players on the respective halfback lines meant that a large portion of the game was played in this zone. Rob Johnson’s effort to kick our first six goals must be noted given of the lack of space of the forwards were afforded to work with.
Our midfield also needed to stand up as the tall timber in the Hammers forward line meant that our undersized backline would be up against it if they got enough supply. Through the agency of Danny Wilson, Gav Vassallo, Matty Campbell, and Damian Stoter Rainer we were able to get on top in this area and provide our forwards some opportunities. David Ford and Kris Merz also had good games and were named among the best.
Although not a visually pleasing match, we got our hands dirty and showed that we can be a good blue collar side. We did not panic when the challenge came from Hampton and we earned the right to sing our song at the end of the day.
The reserves battled well and were in the game for a long time. It was a credit to the boys who took the field as many of them were severely underdone. –Ash Beasy, Lukas Bray and the consistent Luke Wenke were among the best whilst Danny McKee reminded us that thoroughbreds dont fatten in his first game back after a long layoff.
