We welcomed three debutants as we took on the Moorabbin Kangaroos at their home ground. Richard Gee, Brad Dight and Matt Blake all pulled on the colours for the first time at senior level. We also welcomed back Matt Campbell for his first appearance in 2013.
We started well kicking with the aid of the breeze in the first term. Danny Wilson was providing first use of the ball to our midfield, and with Rob Johnson, Justin Doust and Matt Thompson all on song early, we pinched a 3 goal advantage at the first break. The hosts made some ground in the second term and we went to half time with a two goal lead.
It was all about the Demons in the third term as we slammed on seven unanswered goals. Damian Stoter- Rainer was a driving force on his wing, whilst Kris Merz, Leighton Ross and Ben Laier were miserly in defence. It was to prove a match-winning term.
We were disappointed with some of our efforts in the final term as lapses of concentration left the door open for Moorabbin to register four goals. We had done enough hard work to hang on to a 28 point win. It was not our sharpest performance but credit must also go the bad guys who never gave up.
Justin Doust ( above) was on fire up forward, finishing with 5 goals, well supported by Rob Johnston and Matt Thompson with three apiece. Matt Campbell made a strong return to the side, named in the best along with Kris Merz, Damian Stoter-Rainer, Matt Thompson and Matt Blake on debut.
Below: Matt Thompson kicked three goals.
The reserves also had a good win, turning a half time deficit into a twenty eight point victory. Chris Chalmers made a welcome return from injury and Chris Konings and Tim Bacic continued their good form. Jackson Bolch and Jose Rodriguez were also amongst the best. Paul Riley kicked three goals in a good return (it’s alleged they came from 3 kicks and he ran a total of three steps for the match).
