It was as cold as a mother in laws kiss as the first blast of winter hit Newcomen Road on Saturday. The ground continues to be in first class condition and the game was played at good standard.
Our poor first quarter record was corrected to a degree as we jumped out of the blocks to pile on the first three majors. The defence was miserly in the first term, not allowing the visitors in for a goal. It was terrific to see Ordell Buntine make his senior debut in defence after being badly injured in the practice match against Dingley.

The riversiders had the breeze in the second quarter and had their moments as the kicked three goals to reduce the lead. We were able to hit back late in the quarter with three majors of our own to take a handy 18 point buffer to the main break. We had increased the lead to 33 points by three quarter time but the visitors were finishing with aid of the breeze. Our opponents had hung in well all day and we had not done enough to shut the door on them.

We were challenged early in the final term as the margin was quickly reduced to 11 points. To our credit, we responded well when challenged. Chubb Wells capped of a terrific game kicking three of his four goals in the final stanza. Greg Walker also finished the game strongly whilst Lance Baptist kicked a beauty to underline his talent.
Bongo Stark continued his terrific form as an undersize ruckman, giving first use to the likes of Gav Vassallo and Matty Campbell who were also prominent. Steve Sigeti continues to develop as a key defender whilst Ordell showed us what an asset he will be with a few more runs under his belt.

It was not a happy start to the day with Leight’s Lads lowering their colours to the previously winless Sth Yarra. There was never more than a few points in the match and only three separated the two teams at three quarter time. The teams had the scorers snoring in the last term with a curious turn of events. Both teams scored only point for the quarter, leaving the visitors as victors. Paul Norman, Brad Scott and Luke Jacobsen continue to push their names in front of the selectors. The evergreen Paul Riley kicked four majors, whilst it was terrific to see senior premiership player Steve Young back in the colours.
