Perfect condition greeted the combatants at Newcomen Rd on Saturday. The previous meeting between these two teams was not our finest hour and we were keen to earn a little respect.
A slow start did not help the cause. The Chelt mid field was on top early and providing plenty of opportunities for their forwards. Conversely slow movement early on was not helping our forwards, and a goalless first term was the result.
The quarter time break gave us time to compose ourselves and we came out with renewed enthusiasm. We were finally getting our hands on the ball with big Drew giving us first use in the middle and the likes of Brad Scott and Anthony Bernardo working their way into the game. Steve Aitken was presenting well up forward with the coach again a good target at centre half forward.
The backline had its work cut out with Chelt big man Evan McKenzie marking everything that came his way. Fortunately he is a graduate from the Travis Cloke school of goal kicking so his impact on the scoreboard was minimal. By half time we had clawed the margin back to 20 points and were back in the game.
A 5 goal to 2 third term saw us cut the lead to just three points when the oranges appeared. A couple of good opportunities went begging early in the final stanza. A fracas left us out numbered in the backline and the resultant goal made the task a little too hard for our lads. This was a game that was there for the taking but ultimately we were not god enough. The side has improved since the beginning of the season. It’s better to be in a position to win the game an fail than to never look like winning. The more often we can take battles into the last quarter, the more we will prevail.
Above: The song is sung with gusto after the 2's great win.
The good news story of the day had to be Paddy’s boys in the early game. With a mixture of die hards and fill ins we were able to beat the side that held us scoreless for over three quarters in the earlier meeting this year. A beaming coach after the encounter paid tribute o the guys who had stuck by us all year, whilst pleading with the guys who fill in to become more permanently involved. Wise words indeed.
