Tackers Purple Match Report ___________
Match Report: Tackers Day Report – 25th May 2014
It was great to see all the boys excited and ready to enjoy what was going to be a great day ahead.
We had three boys (Ty, Josh and Matthew) that were unable to be there on the day but they were not forgotten and the boys were playing for them as well. They were sadly missed and we can’t wait to have them back up and firing again.
Our first game was against St. May’s (B)
The boys started the game really well. The aim for this game was to play in front, be first in for the ball and to play their positions being a small ground. We managed to kick 5 goals for the game – 2 from Cooper, and one each from Ryan, Braith and Oscar. Kion, Kyle S, Ashton and Zac V (now known as Viney) all had a great game and showed some great individual brilliance during the game.
Our second game was against Kew Rovers (S)
Seeing this team play earlier in the day they stood out for their skill and ‘run on’ at all times game style and we knew we had to pressure them if we were going to stick with them and full credit to the boys they did this very well. We managed to kick the first goal of the game through Jack M which was great and unlucky not to score a few more. It wasn’t until late in the game where they managed to get one back on us. There were some good individual efforts from Harry, Archie and Cooper with their tackling, Jack B’s reading of the play and with 2 telling marks in the back line and Kyle M’s 2nd and 3rd efforts. Jaxon was in everything and gave us first opportunity to get the ball with some good ruck work. Theo was doing a great job getting the ball and involving others into the play. All in all a good hard fort out game by both teams.
Our third game was against Ivanhoe (B)
Our focus for this game was to apply pressure, kick the ball long at every opportunity and to play in front. It was an evenly matched contest with both sides giving their all. Kyle M took a great mark in front of goal and went back to put through a nice goal. There were some good individual efforts such as Evan’s pick up running back into defence under pressure, Jaxon’s 2nd efforts and Ethan’s endeavour to apply sheppards. But the highlight for me was when Viney waited under a high ball in the middle of the ground (not taking his eyes off it) and took what was a very courageous mark. A couple of minutes later he was in the thick of the action again, running the ball up the wing, taking 2 quality bounces and passing to a team with a great kick. This takes good skill and balance so well done Viney!
Our final game was against Hawthorn Citizens (L)
I asked the boys to put in a big last game and this they did. The focus for this game was again to kick the ball long, play in front and to apply lots of pressure. We managed to get four goals for the game – 1 each from Harry and Cooper and 2 from Kion after backing himself to take on the opposition. Harry and Viney again took some good marks, Isaiah, Ryan and Kyan all doing well in the centre and Zac P moving creating many opportunities for us in the forward line.
Thank you to all that helped with the organising of the day and to all parents that volunteered their time with duties and suppling treats for the boys. A special thank you though to Ravyn who did a fantastic job behind the scenes in making the day run so smoothly.
See you all at training.

Gerry

Round 5
Match Report: Round 5 Tackers Purple - May 17th, 2014
Opponent: Beverley Hills (R) at Templestowe Reserve
Thank you to all the parents for getting the boys down to club early for photos and it was great to see the boys looking as sharp as ever.
Our focus was to play in front, 2nd and 3rd efforts, apply 4 quarter pressure and to kick into the open spaces.
The first quarter was evenly matched with both teams going in hard for the ball and we knew we were in for a tough game. Both teams were applying plenty of pressure but at the same time displaying some great skills. A highlight for the quarter was when Ashton ran back in defence, picking up the ball, running along the boundary line and kicking it into open space, to only then chase it down again and continue to push the ball along the wing.
In the second quarter we maintained our good pressure on the opposition. Our midfield players were driving the ball forward and fighting hard with 2nd and 3rd efforts. Our forwards were playing the spaces well and we managed to get two goals for the quarter. The first coming from Jack M after breaking through two tackles and running into an open goal, the next from Cooper after a courageous mark in the square and the next from Kyle S with a nice 20 metre kick on a slight angle.
In the third quarter I asked the boys for a big effort and this they did. We had many chances to score and were unlucky not to do so kicking 4 or 5 points. Our forward pressure was fantastic – keeping the ball in our half of the ground for most of the quarter. It was great to see the boys continuing to centre the ball at every occasion and looking for each other. Cooper was able to get our only goal for the quarter with a nice drop punt from 20 metres out after marking from a kick in. Ryan was playing a good game and again was great was to see him read the play and put himself in the right spots at the right time. Ethan was having possibly his best game for the club with some great individual efforts and some great in and under work. Ethan went on to win the opposition medal which he thoroughly deserved.
In the last quarter it was very much a repeat of the first quarter with good pressure from both sides. I would like to acknowledge the effort of Zac V as well. He was everywhere. He is really becoming a versatile player which is a great asset to have. Well done to all the boys for a great 4 quarter effort.
Captains: Kyle M, Archie
Awards: Ashton, Zac V, Jaxon, Ryan
Goals: (2) Cooper, Kyle S, Jack M
Opposition Medal: Ethan

Round 4
Doncaster Heights Purple Vs Bulleen at Bulleen Park - Round 4:
For the second consecutive week, the first quarter was hotly contested. With Bullen
matching up with us well for size, speed and skills. After a hectic first few minutes it
was Bulleen who hit the scoreboard first, kicking a good goal after working the ball
well through the centre of the ground. The positive for us was that this goal appeared
to be the call to action our boys needed. Theo seemed to immediately take control in
the ruck, tapping the ball to Josh B who was able to put his skills at ground level on
display. Our midfield and wingers work well as a unit for the remainder of the quarter
ensuring we were able to get the ball moving to our advantage for the remainder of
the quarter.
In both the second and third quarter the boys worked well as team to ensure we had a
firm control on the game. There were plenty of positives throughout both of these
quarters, with our backlines tight man on man which limited the opportunities for
their opponents being a standout. Another highlight would have to have been the
numbers of times our boys backed themselves to win the ball from a 50/50 contest.
Jack M, Cooper, Ryan and Ty were all able to win the contested ball multiple times
and then demonstrate their ability run and carry the ball to our team’s advantage.
Our captains also came to life in the 3rd quarter, with Oscar also showing us he has
some real ability in the ruck and Matthew working well around the pack to get a
couple of clearance kicks for us. It was particularly exciting to see the lift in skills
both with and without the ball, we had skills like Jaxon’s and Braith’s kicking (didn’t
miss a targets all day) being equally matched by the tackling from Harry and Keon.
After having things mostly our way for the second and third quarters, the game
opened up in the last. The ball frequently travelled from one end of the ground to
other. With our backline under more pressure during this quarter it was great to see
Ethan stepping up and leading the way. Ethan managed to lay 3 tackles in the space of
1 minute to save what was definitely looking like a certain goal for Bulleen. With the
boys showing a lot of enthusiasm after each of our goals, this was an excellent
example for the team on how preventing an opposition goal is just as important.
Captains: Oscar and Matthew
Awards: Ethan, Keon, Oscar, Matthew and Ryan
Goals: Ryan, Harry, Josh B, Zac P, Braith, Cooper

Round 3
Match Report: Round 3 Tackers Purple - May 4th, 2014
Opponent: Surry Park W (Templestowe Reserve)
General Information for Round 3:
Being a wet day, our focus for the game was to ensure we played in front, kept the ball going our way, pressure the opposition and to kick the ball long at every opportunity.
The first quarter was evenly matched with both teams going in hard for the ball. Both teams were playing good wet weather football and our boys knew they were in for a tough game. Both teams were displaying some great skills and using each other really well.
In the second quarter our boys dominated. We managed to kick 4 goals to none. The goals come from Kyle S, Jack M and 2 from Harry. All of them come from snap shots after some good roving off the pack in the square.
Ty and Cooper’s run and carry was excellent through the middle of the ground.
In the third quarter we managed to maintain our forward pressure. We kicked 6 points for the quarter and unlucky not to score 3 or 4 goals. It was great to see the boys centring the ball and looking for each other.
Braith was in everything and Zac P’s 2nd and 3rd efforts were great and Ryan’s ability to read the play was terrific.
In the last quarter it was very much a repeat of the first quarter. The wet weather took it out of both teams and it was great to see all players trying their hardest right up until the final siren.
We had a new player join the team this week in Theo. It was Theo’s first game of football ever but you wouldn’t have picked it. He was fantastic playing in various positions so well done.
A special thank you to Cohen for coming down and supporting the team. It was great seeing him again and we all wish him a speedy recovery.
Captains: Ryan and Kyle S
Awards: Zac P, Harry, Braith, Oscar, Theo
Goals: (2) Harry, Kyle S, Jack M
Opposition Medal: Cooper
See you all at training.

Round 1
Doncaster Heights Vs Park Orchards (W) at Templestowe Reserve
A beautiful day was presented to us on the 1st round of the season and the boys were chomping at the bits to get stuck into it.
Before starting we presented the kids with their jumpers and it was great to see the excitement in their eyes.
I thought we started the game off really well. Our pressure on the opposition was great with good tackling and chasing. Our backline was maintaining tight and played their role really well with good discipline and attitude. Our skills were great early. There was a good passage of play that resulted in our first goal. Archie took a nice mark in the forward line and saw Oscar by himself and with a nice kick he marked it, went back and put it through for our first goal of the season.
In the second quarter we continued the same as the first. We were winning the ball out of the middle with great 2nd and 3rd efforts. Our second goal come through some good run and carry by Josh where he took 2 bounces and then kicked it to the top of the square where Ryan ran onto it and scored. It was great team work. Park Orchards also managed their first goal in this quarter as well with a nice mark from one of their players in the square. Again, our defence stood tall and were very disciplined.
In the third quarter we continued to be first in at the ball and our pressure again on the opposition was great. We managed to get our third goal for the day through some great individual brilliance from Braith where he broke through a tackle, took two bounces, steadied and a kicked it straight through the middle.
In the fourth quarter, I asked the boys for a big effort and to ensure they give 100% right to the end. They did that! Park Orchards managed to get another goal but our defence again was solid, running hard and playing really close to their man not allowing them any space. It was great to see the boys even in the last quarter kick the ball into the spaces and clear the ball away but what was even more pleasing was to see them go after it again with a 2nd and 3rd effort.
All in all it was I was really proud of the boys. Their attitude, commitment and discipline was first class. So well done boys!
Captains: Evan and Jack M
Awards: Ty, Kyle S, Jack M, Jack B, Evan, Archie
Opposition Medal: Opposition did not have one.
In the next week or so we will send through an email to let everyone know when training will recommence during these school holidays.
