AFLDD Media | 16th October 2013
AFLDD Media review the season of each of the regions clubs, reviewing the season that was including the club highlights and key moments throughout 2013.
Chinchilla SUNS AFC is first on the review system and in their inaugural season there is plenty to talk about. Located 166km from Toowoomba and their furtherest trip 259km (one way) to Goondiwindi, the Suns travelled an incredible 2,946kmthroughout their first season. Ranking them third for overall travel in the competition.
Overall it wasn't a very successful year going by results both their Under 12 McDonald's Shield and 'A' Grade Allied Pickford's Cup sides only recorded the one victory for the season. But off the field, the SUNS were kicking goals.
2013 started with a bang as Brisbane Lions players Matt Maguire and Brent Moloney along with AFLQ staff member Jeff Neumann visited during the biggest day on the calendar, Chinchilla Melon Festival. Matt and Brent interacted throughout the day, working famous SUNS hotday stand, melon skiing and pumping up the SUNS to the 10,000 strong crowd.
The SUNS boasted a localised Under 8's and 10's program along with entering competitive sides in the Under 12 AFLDDJ McDonald's Shield competition along with the AFLDD Allied Pickford's Cup senior competition.
It took until Round 17 when the Under 12's took home their first ever premiership points, recording a nail-biting 8-point victory over Pittsworth Power. Jerom Blower led the way on the day with a best on ground performance, also kicking one of the SUNS four goals for the morning.
For the Allied Pickford's Cup side, the 'A' Graders tasted victory for the first time in Round 6 defeating Lockyer Valley by a handy 19-points. James Kratzmann was the hero that day booting 7-goals and picking up the 3 Holman Medal votes that day, as footy was all the talk in the watermelon town.
Kratzmann was the highest placed SUN come Holman Medal night finishing on a club high 7votes, while fellow Chinchillian Jacob Lui finished on 3votes for the home and away season.
James Kratzmann also took out the inaugural SUNS Best and Fairest, with Geoff Woodgate not too far behind as the Runner Up. Jye Hartwig was the Rookie of the Year, with young star and future female footy talent Lara Paget awarded the Under 12 Best and Fairest Award.
With 93 members in 2013, the SUNS will be ready to rise to greater heights in 2014. Well done to Bryan and Helen Gent, along with the entire Chinchilla AFC players, coaches, volunteers, sponsors and supporters on a terrific season.
