Bakers Creek Tigers AFC have announced today the appointment of Matt Fidler as the Clubs Senior Coach for the 2014 AFL Mackay season.
Matt has spent the past 25 years playing and coaching football. A career that began with the Richmond under 19 grade in the VFL, then North Ballarat that are a power house in the BFL, followed by stints at Colac, Cobden and in the Geelong League.
Matt has recently moved to Mackay with his employment after a decorated career playing across country Victoria.
Fidler comes with a wealth of football experience both as a player and coach that he will use to help guide the recently struggling Tigers on the road to success.
On field the Tigers have struggled over the past 3 season with a number of players leaving the Club for one reason or another, but off field culture have been strengthened by the influx of families to the Club, especially from the Sarina area.
Bakers Creek Football Manager Ian Rix said on the appointment of Fidler, “We are rapt to have someone of Matt’s experience and passion for the game at Bakers Creek.”
“Since the end of last season we have been working tirelessly to appoint an experienced coach and get as many ex-players to come back to Bakers Creek, and with Matt’s appointment it a major piece to that puzzle coming together.”
“As a Club we are ready to take the next step out of the rebuilding faze.”
“We have had enough of the losing and so have formed a solid Football Committee that are meeting regularly and have been proactive in acquiring a coach and retaining and recruiting players.”
New Coach Fidler said “I am under no illusion of the hard work that will have to be done to create a successful football environment. However, I have been impressed with the professionalism and honesty of the boys I have met, and that is one of the reasons I have put my hand up to take on this challenge.”
“I am looking forward to meeting the playing group, their families, the supporters and sponsors; everyone is part of a successful football club and from my past premiership success, I believe I have the formula to get this Club, some respect back on field and instil a culture and a direction to follow, long after my term."
"As a coach you’re simply a custodian of someone else's hard work, if It's not me that reaps the reward of this journey, I'm not fussed, it's about everyone getting involved, working as one and singing the same tune together, it's a pretty simple plan, a plan that makes you want to be hanging around the joint, not having to be, a plan that has bought success for me in the past. It starts with damn hard work."
Bakers Creek President Ben Faulkner said “The appointment of Matt Fidler is a step in the right direction for our Club to follow on the foundations put in place over the past two years by Shaun Williams, with the united aim of taking us back into finals contention.”
Bakers Creek will have their first training session under their new coach on Monday 18 November at 5.45pm at Etwell Park and would like to invite all past, present and prospective players down to have a run.
