THE CAREY REGAN MEDAL
At the beginning of the 2009 premiership season, the award for the senior grade best & fairest was renamed. From 2009 going forward, the player/s judged best & fairest for every season will be awarded the CAREY REGAN MEDAL.
To win the Carey Regan Medal is the highest individual honour at the Mackay City Hawks Football Club, and it is easy to understand why this award carries his name. Carey is a foundation member of the club, life member, premership player, coach, president and long-term committee member. Carey bleeds brown & gold and is loved by all.
Carey’s list of achievements are as follows...
· STARTED PLAYING FOR WEST / WALKERSTON CLUB IN 1970 WHEN THE COMPETITION STARTED IN MACKAY. WON THE AWARD FOR “MOST IMPROVED PLAYER”
· IN 1971 HE WON THE AWARD FOR THE “ BEST DEFENDER “
· IN 1973 HE WON THE AWARD FOR “LEADING GOAL KICKER”
· IN 1975 WALKERSTON WENT ON TO WIN THEIR FIRST AND ONLY PREMIERSHIP AND CAREY WON THE AWARD FOR THE “ BEST ON GROUND “ in the Grand Final
· IN 1977 CAREY ALONG WITH 4 OTHERS SAW AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF YOUNG PEOPLE ATTRACTED TO THE GAME BUT WERE NOT GETTING ANY GAME TIME ELSEWHERE SO THEY SET OUT TO START “ MACKAY CITY HAWKS “ FROM SCRATCH AND WITH A SET OF JUMPERS DONATED BY THE “ HAWTHORN FOOTBALL CLUB “ THEY WERE OFF AND RUNNING.
· IN 1978 CAREY WAS “ BEST ON GROUND “ IN THEIR FIRST EVER WIN ( 15/04/78 ) AND HE ALSO WON THE “ BEST DEFENDER “ AWARD ON PRESENTATION NIGHT
· IN 1979 HE WON HIS FIRST “ BEST & FAIREST” AWARD FOR THE SENIORS.
· IN 1980 HE WON THE “ LEADING GOAL KICKER “ AWARD FOR THE CLUB.
· IN 1981 HE WON HIS SECOND “ BEST & FAIREST “ AWARD FOR THE SENIORS
· IN 1982 HE WAS RUNNER-UP IN THE SENIOR “ BEST & FAIREST “
· IN 1984 HE WAS “ BEST & FAIREST “ IN THE PRE-SEASON CARNIVAL.
· IN 1985 HE BECAME THE ONLY PLAYER TO BE AWARDED
· “LIFE MEMBERSHIP” TO THE MAFL.
· IN 1986 HE WON THE “ BEST BACKMAN “ AWARD
· IN 1988 HE WON THE “ LEADING GOAL KICKER “ AWARD FOR HIS CLUB.
· IN 1990 HE WON HIS THIRD CLUB “ BEST & FAIREST “ AWARD
· IN 1993 HE WAS RUNNER-UP “BEST & FAIREST” IN RESERVES.
· ALONG WITH THOSE ACHIEVEMENTS ..............
· HE PLAYED REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL FOR MACKAY FROM
· 1973 THRU TO 1986 AND WAS CAPTAIN IN 1982 AND 1983.
· HE WAS CHOSEN AS NORTH QUEENSLAND REP PLAYER IN 1979 AND 1980
HE HAS COACHED THE SENIOR CLUB ON THREE OCASSIONS. IN 1984 / 1993 / 1994. AND HE ALSO COACHED THE UNDER 17 SIDES IN 1990 & 1991 AND GOT TWO PREMIERSHIPS IN 90 & 91 WITH THESE YOUNG LADS MANY OF THEM WENT ON TO LATER PLAY IN THE MACKAY SENIOR COMPETITION.
HE WAS ALSO ON THE MAFL BOARD AS A DIRECTOR WITH IAN BURRILL & CHRIS WALLACE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PART OF THE BOARD OF MACKAY CITY CLUB.
IN THE MID NINETIES HE ALSO UMPIRED IN THE MAFL COMPETITION AND WAS APPOINTED AS A CENTRAL UMPIRE FOR THE 1995 GRAND FINAL AND AS A RESERVE UMPIRE IN 1996.
CAREY HAS BEEN NAMED AS THE FULLBACK OF THE DECADE ( 1980 – 1990 ) FOR THE MAFL. AND RECENTLY WHEN A BEST TEAM IN 40 YEARS WAS CALLED FOR CAREY WAS VOTED IN AS BEST FULLBACK.
