Coaches/Team Managers Information

1. TEAM COACH

The team coach’s role is to get the players to learn the positive lessons of sport, learn the fundamentals of basketball, put forward their best efforts and enjoy themselves.

By attaining these objectives or even some of these, your players, their parents and you will be well satisfied with a season that has accomplished these goals. In addition, you will be rewarded to see your team members maturing as a basketball player and as people.

2. ASSISTANT COACH

Helping the teach coach perform the above duties. This person may assist in a number of circumstances:-

  • Where the team coach is unavailable for training during the season on a continuous basis (say for work commitments) the assistant may take the training sessions on that agreed night.
  • A person (adult or junior) who might be interested in helping the team coach, but perhaps not experienced, willing to spend a season “learning”.
  • If there was no offer of a team coach, two offers for assistance coach could lead to those two persons “job sharing” the coach’s role (might be a little less overwhelming).
3. TEAM MANAGER

It is the essential that each team has a team manager. This job can be shared between two people if necessary.

This person will help the coach in a number of ways, but mainly to allow the coach to take control of the player’s on game day with little distraction. The team manager will help by filling in the team sheet each game day.

4. POLICY ON TEAM SELECTION

Players are graded according to these criteria;

  1. Age- playing in own age group
  2. Ability
  3. Team balance
  4. Committee Discretion

Any clarification of the above should be referred to the committee.

Teams are submitted where the committee feels that they should be graded, however it is recognised that this may not always work out, as Diamond Valley Basketball Association have the last say with regards to our gradings.

It is important to remember that the committee needs to pick teams four to six weeks prior to the end of the previous season in order to submit team lists to DVBA deadlines.

Any concerns regarding team selections should be addressed to the appropriate co-ordinator (Boys & Girls Team). Current coordinator details will be available on the website and registration forms.

Due to DVBA court scheduling, girls team members need to be aware that if team grading changes after the start of the season, game night may change. This is out of the club’s control. Please be aware of this when registering.

Generally the girls teams will be as follows:-

Under 8      Saturday

Under 10     Saturday

Under 12     Tuesday nights

Under 14     Wednesday nights

Under 16     Thursday nights

Under 18     Tuesday nights

The boys teams always play on a Saturday.

5. PLAYERS COURT TIME

The club policy is that during a normal game each player should have approximately the same time on the court as his or her fellow team members. During finals games, coaches are requested to see that each player spends a reasonable time on the court.

6. SCORERS

It is the responsibility of the team manager, to draw up a scoring roster for each family. It is the duty of each family to score, or learn to score, or provide an alternative scorer. If the rostered scorer cannot attend a game when it is their turn to score, they are to arrange with another parent so that there is no confusion on game day.

7. TEAM FILL IN PLAYERS

If you require additional players for your team on a given week or someone approaches you to play in your team, please do not arrange this yourself. You must contact your co-ordinator as soon as the problem arises and the co-ordinator will appoint a suitable replacement or help with your enquiry.

A player can play up one age group and up or down one grade ie. A player playing Under 14C can either play 16B or C, but not A.

8. SINGLETS

When two St. Thomas’ teams are playing each other it is responsibility of the team manager of the team mentioned second on the fixture to collect the singlets from the Property Co-Ordinator and return to same as soon as possible after the match.

00 can only be used in first two games.

N.B. Our colours are registered so therefore any colour clash requires the opposition to change their singlets or forfeit the game.

9. TRAINING HALL

Coaches must ensure that facilities are not abused and that the hall is kept clean and tidy.

We are hoping to appoint a Stadium Supervisor shortly who will be responsible for opening and closing the venue, general clean up after each session etc.

If a coach cancels a training session, we ask that he/she notify the Stadium Supervisor and/or our Training Co-ordinator (Kate Coen – 0407677769).

10. GRADING MATCHES

The first five games are for grading purposes and players may be interchanged between teams if approved by the coordinator. The association may also regrade individual teams based on match results during that period.
