The Northern Blues Amateurs seniors have concluded their 2014 preseason in style by defeating the Moonee Valley Magpies in a tight contest at Ormond Park on Saturday.
Despite holding the lead for a majority of the match, the Blues needed to stave off a second half Magpies’ resurgence in order to keep their perfect pre-season record in tact.
In and under midfielder Jay Phelan was instrumental in the win for Northern, kicking four goals to be among their best players.
Matt and Lachlan Holmes were also dangerous, linking up well across the midfield and half-back to accumulate plenty of possessions.
The tough scrap should prove to be the perfect lead-up to next weeks first round match against the Albert Park Falcons at Sportscover Arena.
In other games, the twos also continued their great pre-season form by registering another win against the Moonee Valley reserves.
Coach Ben Bliss was impressed with his team’s performance, stating there were plenty of positives to be taken from the match.
In the under 19’s, Doug Hamilton’s squad suffered their first loss of the pre-season by succumbing to a rampant Magpies line-up.
