The Northern Blues Amateurs extended their winning streak to four on Saturday, defeating La Trobe University 18. 18 (126) to 9. 16 (70) at Ruthven Reserve.
The win makes the Blues the first team to reach the 1000-point milestone in Division 3 this season, solidifying them as one of the best offensive forces in the competition.
Northern utilised strong first and third quarters toward the tennis-court end to build a large lead on the Trobers, kicking 12 of their 18 goals for the game between those sticks.
George Wakim’s side made a concentrated effort on competing hard at the stoppages where they were able to gain the ascendancy over Brenton Hunt’s squad.
The defensive mindset of the midfield was complemented by stellar work in the backline, where a team-oriented mindset kept La Trobe’s in-form goalkicker Jake McMeel goalless.
At the other end of the ground, Damon Marcon (4 goals) and Lachlan McRedmond (5 goals) headed eight players who were able to get on the scoresheet.
The winger and forward are both in the race to catch the competitions leading goalkicker Noel Bahnsen with 33 goals on 28 (Marcon) and 25 (McRedmond) goals respectively.
Nathan Parkes was the catalyst for the Northern midfield in the ruck, winning the hit-outs while pushing deep into defence to chop out in the marking contests.
Parkes was also able to hit to scoreboard alongside Nicholas DeAndrade who kicked two goals apiece.
The Northern victory sets the stage for a blockbuster clash against Swinburne University this weekend away at St James Park.
The Razorbacks currently trail the Blues on percentage; however sit on equal points after seven wins from their first nine games.
In other games, both the under-19s and reserves faded late to suffer defeats in the lead-up to the senior contest.
Premiership player Olsen Clark proved his credentials in the 19’s match while supporters were delighted to see the return of Jake Powell to the line-up.
Dustin Cunningham and Jacob Retamal both performed admirably in the reserves loss.
