The Northern Blues Amateurs have risen back to third on the ladder after trouncing UHS-VU by 38 points at Ruthven Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues commanded possession well in the 11.14 (80) to 6.6 (42) win, exposing the Vultures to relentless pressure across the ground all match.
During the week the group earmarked the clash as a season defining contest, with a loss resulting in the team sliding into the middle of a congested division 3 ladder.
In the first quarter, the Blues’ struggled to counter the opposition’s loose man in defence, kicking just three goals with a strong breeze at their backs.
However, an extremely disciplined second quarter set-up a five goal half-time lead for the Blues, outplaying UHS-VU with an emphasis on utilising their first option with the ball.
Smart zoning and an ability to spread well from the stoppages allowed the Blues to maintain their advantage over Uni High for the remainder of the contest.
Northern’s midfield was responsible for a brunt of the pressure inside with Tony Vuwai and Todd Beames leading the Blues with their fierce tackling.
Damon Marcon enjoyed a return to form in the outing, kicking five of Northern’s 11 goals for the afternoon.
Key defender Reed Jepson was also instrumental for the Blues, countering UHS attacks deep in defence to continue his stellar season to date.
Speaking to Northern Blues Amateurs' Media post-game midfield brute Jay Phelan said he was proud of the way his side went about the important match.
“We prepared well on the track during the week so I think that went a long way towards getting this win,” Phelan said.
“We really wanted to concentrate on running hard and getting the midfielders to push deep into defence.”
“We’re looking towards putting together some consistent performances now to stay inside the top six.”
Both senior teams will now face the winless South Mornington away at Citation Oval in round seven.
In other results, Doug Hamilton’s under 19’s got their first win of 2014 by five points away at Therry Penola.
The Lions had a chance to level the match with a kick after the siren in the 6.11 (47) to 8.4 (52) Blues’ win, but missed to the elation of our boys.
Damien Delle-Vergini (3 goals) and Omar Ramadan were both outstanding in the win.
