Whoever came up with the line
that it is a game of two halves was not only quite the mathematician but
must
have had a premonition of the game on Saturday. The Friars dominated
the
game in the first half but did not execute as cleanly or as efficiently
as
possible. Against a hefty breeze in the first stanza the Friars run the
ball well into the breeze to establish a ¼ time ascendency. It
wasn’t pretty but neither were the conditions.
With the breeze in the 2nd
quarter our players continued to dominate the game but did not make the
most of
the opportunities presented and kicked 3.6 for the quarter to take in a
21
point lead at the half. Whilst clearly playing the better footy, that
inefficiency gave the opposition a whiff of opportunity.
The second half saw the wind
pick up, the temperature drop and a few rain squalls as well. This had
the effect of concentrating the game into a smaller area and allowed the
bigger
bodied players from Bulleen-Temp seize control of the game and have it
played
on their terms. They ensured the ball was held tight in packs and did
not
allow our faster players the room to open the play up. The 14 shot to 1
third
quarter was an accurate reflection of the control the opposition had.
The breeze in the last quarter
favoured the Friars, but again the opposition bottled up the play
successfully
and constrained our ability and will to run and carry.
The belief to take the game on
is important to the Friars and as seen last weekend by the Demons and
the Blues
it is great to watch. I know this is the message from Coach Feutrill
and
we are assured of a terrific contest against Werribee this Saturday.
Go Friars, Sal

Another fantastic win for the
3s on the weekend. The boys are proving that they will be a force to be
reckoned with this season if we continue to go about our footy the way
we are.
The 3rds this season have a number
of players in their 1st season of footy, which I believe makes the win
on the
weekend all the more exciting for both the 3rds and for the club. There
are a number of players that will no doubt be putting pressure on the
Reserves
for a spot in the side.
On to the game, our game was
setup with some fantastic run out of the backline by Luke Maher and Nat
Tomecek. The boys really took the game on backing their speed against
an
older slower Oakleigh side. Ryan Bartlett was giving us first hands on
the
footy from the word go, with some great tap rucking. Charbel Taouk was
also fantastic showing great leadership to some of the younger players
with his
voice and skills.
On another note, I take this
opportunity to congratulate Chris (Lefty) Pelosi on being appointed
captain of
the 3rds for the year. Lefty's commitment to the Friars and his voice
on
the field will aid the team in their development.
Onwards and Upwards from here
in the 3rds.
Go Friars, Ben Fisher
