Goal Kickers: J. Urbano, T. Feher
Best Players: D. Cardamone, A. Pearson, J. Urbano, D. Egerton, D. Di Bartolomeo, A. Messina
As
I said to the boys after the game - I couldn’t have asked for anything
more from those who took the field on Saturday – a truly courageous
effort. Senior & Reserves coaches and players commented to me
throughout the day how they thought our effort and spirit was
outstanding – well done lads!
After
a bright start to give us a lead at 1/4 time we then had to play 10-15
minutes of the 2nd quarter with only 16 fit men (Tom Feher Inj., Andrew
Messina Inj., Tom Stanbrook - Blood Rule) when St. Bernard’s kicked 5
of their 7 goals for the quarter. It was a huge effort to keep them in
range as it was very hard to defend 2 extra players in this time.
Our
2nd half was fantastic once we got 18 on the park (thanks to Luke Maher
for making that happen). To be outscored 5 goals to 4 was a great
effort and even though they scored many points most of that was because
we were able to keep pressure on their ball carrier by having 18 on the
field. It was going to be tough to score with Daniel Massarotti and
Luke Maher unable to lead and chase properly so to get 4 goals was a
great effort and a great reward for the work in the midfield. Daniel Di
Bartolomeo was outstanding with a super 4 quarter effort in which he
played at least 85% of the game on the ball.
Our
captain certainly showed how to lead a team – although Massa was always
going to be very restricted in his movement he put the team first to
make sure we had enough at great risk to himself – great courage and
commitment. I have no doubt that his effort and the efforts of others
inspired everyone else to give it their best shot.
No
doubt it is a huge challenge to keep things rolling for the next 3
weeks with so many out injured but I am confident all of the boys will
stick together and help each other out to make sure remain competitive
in the contest at all times like we did on Saturday.
I
am coaching a great bunch of guys and despite great adversity they keep
looking after the team to make sure their mates are not alone when up
against the odds. The club is very fortunate to have these boys coming
through the ranks and will have great character among the playing ranks
for many years to come.
Cheers Pete
