Looking for 5 wins in a row we headed out to play the in form Prahan who had impressively won 4 of their last 5 games. With the additions of Tom Woodman up from U/19’s for his first game and Tom Langford in for his first game after a heavy handed suspension! It wasn’t long before the Tom Tom’s started drumming with both of
them in the action early! The game went for the first 10 minutes in a deadlock before Woods marked and goaled. The game opened up in the last half of the quarter and Marchesi on the burst slotted a running goal, followed by a Mirabella 10 metre strike from a half volley! Prahan hit back and kicked 3 in a row to take the game right up to us, Daou cleverly marked and kicked truly only to see Prahan get one on the bell, all even at the break.
It was obvious that Prahan were here for the contest but they unfortunately ran into a Friar train in the second quarter where we played our best football for the year
kicking 8 (should have been 11 except for umpiring anomalies). The Friars were all over Prahan and our tall’s in Cunningham, Mirabella and Daou kicked 5 between them for the quarter. Mattison was also dominating in the ruck and given Stafford, Scannell and Hogan first use. At ground level Gezza Kennedy was his usual creative self feeding our runners. Woodsy & Jimmy O’Meara were working tirelessly across half forward chasing and scrapping and holding the ball in our forward line. Brine, Woodman and Smith lead the backs with great resilience and attack. Our great quarter saw us go into the main break 37 points to the good.
Prahan refused to give in and played their best quarter for the day kicking 5 to our 3 courtesy of Woods & Daou who was marking everything in sight. Lucarelli joined the
forward gang of scrappers as he laid tackle after tackle. Janson & Mark Stafford used their ability to turn onto their left with great effect opening up Prahan and allowing Marchesi, Brendan Stafford and Scannell room through the corridor.
Prahan had dragged themselves back into the game and were 32 points down going into the last but our fitness and height saw us get through to a respectable 38 point win against a determined opponent. Daou finished off an excellent game with 6 goals and along with Cunningham, Mirrabella and Mattison controlled the skies at Prahan. Our tall’s had contributed 10 goals from our 19. We had many good players with Woods and O’Meara really adding new aspects to their games! Brine was brilliant in the backline, Scannell, Stafford *2 and Marchesi gave us great drive.
Despite the margin I felt that we were well below our best so the result was very pleasing and no doubt a tough month of training and away games 3 out of 4 in June! Our
June gives an indication of the maturing and development of the group winning all 4 games in June. We face a big test against Old Mentonians but they will be up a much better drilled unit this time and I am sure that we will lift a game and play our best game for the year next week at Friar Park. Hope to see many of you down there supporting our boys!
Cheers,
Feuta
