Again we faced a must win game at Friar Park, albeit coming off a much better away effort than the game before. Injuries have cruelled our ranks over the past couple of weeks and concern was high that without Aaron Brosolo our forward line may lack some sting!! We are indeed fortunate however to be able to bring in quality replacements this year as opposed to the previous 2 seasons. To that end the value of the extra numbers was highlighted when John Hogan came in to replace Jarryd Piltz (cartilage strain), John had played the last 2 games in the reserves and the prior game in the thirds!!
We opened the game well but again failed to grasp our opportunities kicking 1.6 in the first quarter to Fitzroy’s 3.2. Mirrabella as our key forward was giving us a great target and with O’Meara’s hard work up and down the ground we looked potent in our forward line. Additionally the second efforts were well up and many tackles were laid by our forwards which restricted Fitzroy’s run, however 2 goals from free kicks (one with the assistance of 25M penalty) gave them scoreboard pressure. I felt satisfied that we had been in hard and had just not taken our opportunities in the first quarter.
The second term opened up with a quick goal from a centre clearance to the Friars as Janson continued to dominate his wing. Lucarelli stepped up the ante with his hardness and quickness and we had another to take a slender lead. The backline was at its stingy best and Fitzroy forwards found space at an absolute premium with Brine, Twomey & Storey shutting them down at every contest while Mick Allemand & Dogga provided rebound!! O’Meara was racking up possessions across half forward but again we didn’t make the most of our opportunities kicking 3-3 for the term to go into the major break level with the opposition. We should have been 5 goals to the better but we were playing well with good intensity and style.
The second half opened up with our twin towers Mirabella & Cunningham marking everything but our kicking for goal was still astray kicking 3-5 for the quarter in a great display of running football. The traffic was very much one way and our runners Stafford, Kennedy, Lucarelli, Marchesi and Janson all were dominate throughout the quarter. The backline resembled Rahul Dravid’s famed forward defence as Fitzroy must have felt like a kid throwing rocks against a wall!
We finished off the game well with more running as Scannell started to open up the opposition with his extra run and fitness that opened up the ground for our running players. The final margin of 33 points didn’t really reflect our dominance on the day but it certainly gives us an indication of where we belong in this grade. We are starting to grow into our running style and I am sure that we will give a great account of ourselves down at Werribee this week. When I looked across the team on Saturday we had 22 contributors and it is was a hard earned team effort!!
Cheers Dullard!
