Saturdayâs game was a watershed in the season for us after we put in a totally unacceptable display the prior week against South Melbourne. As a group we decided that from here on we play as winners looking to keep the game on our terms with us being responsible for any result this season.
Prahran came out at 0-3 and to say their season was on the line was an understatement, we knew the game was not going to be an easy one but we were determined to play with the style we have been seeking to achieve over the past 2 seasons.
The first quarter started with both teams crashing in as though their lives depended on it! Prahran were able to stymie our run and close the game down and it wasnât until late that we were able to get the run we were seeking and this resulted in 2 strong goals to Nathan Cunningham. Our intent was evident early and particularly from our forwards OâMeara and Abdallah who were working hard to retain the ball in our forward line. Our midfield was bolstered with the Gerard Kennedy directing traffic through the middle of the ground giving us good structure.
The second quarter started and our running players Marchesi, Janson, MCdonald ,Stafford and Scannell were on fire and OâMeara and Brosolo were providing a handful for the Prahan defenders. As the game began to open up our run got stronger and we went into the long break with a handy 9 point lead. The score for the quarter 4.2 to 2.1 told the story though with us really getting on top all around the ground.
The third quarter we totally dominated Prahranâs our runners opened the game up and all of a sudden the Friar machine was in progress as our forward line were the benefactors of the drive being generated by our plethora of running players who were rotating through the middle of the ground. Our running game was best displayed by a magnificent running long bomb from back pocket Cale Smith who worked his way on the end of a string of handballs to goal from the top of the arc!! We had 14 shot at goal for a return 5-7 and 2 on the full so at ¾ time the scoreboard didnât really reflect where the game was at but still we had a 39 point lead.
The last quarter turned into a war of attrition as both sides suffered injuries ours being more often than not âhead highâ. Our backs who had been miserly all day were put under pressure from their taller opponents but Storey, Celotti, Hill & co were up for the challenge and held strong as we squared the quarter with Prahan at 4 goals apiece. This saw us run out 38 point winners on the day but this could have been far greater had we converted from several easy misses.
A strong result for us which could have been a lot greater but to take 4 points in an ugly game was a really good effort by the boys!! Wer now have to head down to Keysborough on Saturday and take the 4 points from Old Mentonians to get us into the 4!!
Cheers, Feuta
