Seniors
A massive five changes which included three between team selection on Thursday and match time Saturday. A new look side, which included two more debutants, U19 player Charlie Haley, who has been a star performer in the unders for two seasons and Jackson McKay. Jacko is a testament to the value of perseverance. Still a youngster, he was a regular thirds player in 2012 before forcing his way into a strong Reserves team. He has been rewarded for consistent performances this season.
You had to wonder how we would adapt when turning over a quarter of the side in one week. We did not have to wait long to find out !
After a round 1 thumping St Bedes have turned their season around and sit just outside the four. In the ten previous Premier division matches between the clubs the score stands at De La Salle six, St Bedes three with one draw. Leading up to this encounter St Bedes were yet to record a win at De La Salle.
In summary St Bedes were far too good all day and played some great hard running football culminating in terrific delivery to their leading forwards.
The Saturday morning withdrawal of the brilliant Jake Williams and strong ruck Ben Humphrey did not help our cause with poor disposals when in great positions to score. On at least four occasions DLS meekly turned the ball over with St Bedes inflicting the maximum punishment.
After a fairly even 1st quarter which saw St Bedes keep DLS to 3 behinds and establish an 11 point lead, they blitzed DLS with 5 of the next 6 goals all within 17 minutes of play. Whereas DLS could not get its free running game going, St Bedes found space easily and delivered perfectly to their forwards.
The deficit had blown out to 44 points before 1st gamer (DLS 8th for season) Charlie Haley goaled and the deficit was 39 points at half time.
DLS came out strongly in the 3rd quarter with captain David Lowe exerting a strong influence at centre bounces resulting in 3 unanswered goals to Charlie Haley, Nick Roberts & Hugh Nicholson within the first 9 minutes to reduce the deficit to a manageable 22 points. A failure to convert a relatively easy shot saw the ball go up the other end for a St Bedes goal and what should have been a lead under 3 goals was close to 5. That took the wind out of the sails as St Bedes kicked another two before ¾ time.
Starting quarter 4 with a commanding 42 point margin St Bedes pressed strongly but the DLS undermanned defence held firm with Tyson Hunt marking well. St Bedes were dominant though the middle stages of the quarter with three unanswered goals to seal a strong win and retain the Lasallian Cup.
A late goal to the hard working, double tagged, Sam Pickett gave reward for his efforts. Charlie Haley with 2 goals and Jackson McKay in the ruck made promising debuts in an otherwise bleak day.
