Seniors
A great day for the club. On a beautiful balmy autumn day, six teams in action across five different venues with each recording a win. The main game saw us taking on the highly fancied Old Scotch. The clubs have had some epic battles in recent years including a superb 2012 1st semi-final when in a high quality contest we prevailed by about 3 goals.
They are a team studded with top line players with several not long out of the AFL. However despite the pre-season hype they have not really hit their straps yet and sit at 2 - 2. On the back of winning 3 tight games we sit 4 - 0 and on top of the ladder.
We kicked with the breeze favouring the scoreboard end and got away to good start when Tim Allan found space and goaled with his first kick for the club. Scotch then dominated the next 15 minutes and did all the attacking. Despite going to the non scoring end they led for most of the quarter and looked very dangerous before we pulled it back with a couple of late goals to lead by 2 points at the first change.
The second quarter started poorly and a quick goal to the visitors saw them take the lead. The backline was under enormous pressure as Scotch got on top in the midfield and kept a steady supply to their forwards. In perhaps our worst period of football for the year they kicked 3 goals on the trot in quick time to lead by that margin. With the breeze at their back they could have reasonably expected to go in with a decent half time lead however as we have done regularly this season we found another gear. Ed Clinch kicked a great opportunist goal followed soon after by Jake Gotch who kicked truly from a set shot. When Pickett converted it was all square with the scores locked at 6.5 a piece at half time.
An early goal to Scotch saw them wrestle back the lead. With the breeze we started to look better but had trouble hitting the scoreboard and wasted a number of good opportunities. A long period of end-to-end football was broken by a goal to Allan. Pickett’s next goal was cancelled out by a quick Scotch reply. Ben Humphrey slotted a nice goal on the run and then a clever snap from Jake Williams saw us lead by 16 points at the final change. In a game that had seen several momentum changes this was a handy but not decisive lead.
Scotch jumped out quickly with two early goals and the game was up for grabs. Ed Clinch again got us rolling with a classic ‘front and square’ snap. Two quick goals to Sam Picket and we had opened up a 20 point lead. The backline stood up under extreme pressure as we maintained the buffer until deep into the game. Two late goals to the visitors tightened things up but we held on to record a hard fought 8 point victory.
The game followed the theme of most of our matches so far this season. A tight contest with never more than a goal or two in it for most of the day. Once again at stages in the last quarter we looked in real trouble but as we have done four times now we managed to kick goals we most needed to secure the points.
This was certainly not our best effort for the year and we were maybe a bit flat after the big build to last weeks clash at Beaumaris. However some terrific performances kept us in the game. Tom Humphrey is having a fantastic year in defence and was impassable once again. Ed Clinch continued his recent stellar form and is proving a real handful for opposition defenders. Sam Haslem has also taken his game to another level and was again amongst the best. For the 5th week in a row Sam Pickett snared 4 goals to lead the scorers.
Another tough game next week as we travel to the University to take on second placed Uni Blacks.

Reserves
After a slow start to the season the 2s are on a roll with their 3rd big victory on the trot. This time a 106 demolition of Scotch who are usually pretty good at reserves level. After two years out of football Olmo Salvatore is running into some nice form with B.O.G honours while Hugh Nicholson put on another great display, kicking 5 goals along the way. Nick Fyfleid again in the goals with 5. Harrison and Hutchinson also in good form today.

Thirds
Although winless coming into this game the 3s have not been disgraced. We have been in the contest for long periods but unable to run out games. No such trouble today with a massive win, keeping the opposition goalless in the process. We will take a lot of confidence from this win as we look to get the season back on track. Dan Griffin and Will Maas the best with Kneebone 5 and Morwood 4 the best of the goal kickers.

Huge win for the Warriors at Basil Street against neighbours Oakleigh. Probably not great for the competition but 50 scoring shots to 5 on the way to a 160 point victory. As you might expect plenty of goalkickers with Oakley 6 and Coffey 5 leading the way. Hassal, Hyde and Byers the best.
