Seniors
In the pre-season you would not possibly believe that heading in to round 4 these two sides would sit undefeated and 1st & 2nd on the ladder. But so it was and we ventured into unfamiliar territory to take on the ladder leader Beaumaris who have been very impressive in their first season the in the top grade. Our own form was good across the first 2 weeks but a bit patchy last week as we eked out a win at home to Carey. On form and with the home ground advantage Beaumaris were the slight favourites.
In front of a bumper crowd it proved to be a game worthy of the two top sides. A magnificent game with little separating the teams from start to finish.
Kicking with a decent breeze we made a great start with Seb Gotch landing a long bomb within the first two minutes. Beaumaris then pulled back 2 crucial goals into the breeze and as the quarter ticked over half way we still trailed. We ran out the quarter well with some late goals giving us a 3 goal advantage at the first break, probably about par considering the strength of the wind. Pickett prominent with 2 first quarter goals.
The game became a very physical affair in the second quarter. Plenty of hard hits and crunching tackles. For a 10 minute period we could not get our hands on the football but defended strongly to hold them at bay. Beaumaris looked full of running and approaching the middle of the quarter they hit the front and with the wind at their back could sniff a decent half time lead. For the umpteenth time this season Seb Gotch and ‘Frank’ Pickett produced special efforts when needed most and their goals wrestled back the momentum. Nick Robert was very prominent in this period and we went in at the half time with a 1 point lead.
For most of the third quarter we looked the better side and seemed to control the game everywhere but on the scoreboard. Credit to the opposition who managed to hold us out when a couple of times we looked like we might run over them. With the ball locked in our half for long periods we finally broke the deadlock with a nice mark and goal to Jake Williams. We managed to keep the opposition scoreless and with goals to Roberts and Pickett we held a handy 21 point lead at the last change. With the home team coming home with the strong breeze a tight last quarter was guaranteed.
A couple of early goals to Beaumaris and we were quickly on the back foot. A tense period followed and they looked certain to run over the top of us. We defended resolutely under extreme pressure and a brilliant goal to Seb Gotch against the run of play gave us some breathing space. A slight momentum shift and we started to run in numbers share the ball well. We looked safe but with a few minutes left on the clock a goal to the Sharks bought it back to 6 points. They attacked again from the next centre clearance but we managed to extract it from the Beaumaris forward arc and keep possession. We ran it up the ground and a Lachy Bull goal right the siren extended winning margin to 12 points. Our third close victory for the season.
A few players a bit out of sorts today so in the circumstances this was a terrific win against very impressive opposition. Jake Williams ran hard from start to finish and Nick Roberts showed his class with another great performance. Tom McMahon very good in the ruck while hard nut defenders Tom Humphrey and Sam Brooks terrific in the back half. Pickett kept up his average with another 4 goals.
Next week back at home as we take on the highly fancied Old Scotch.

Reserves
After a shaky start to the season the 2s look back on track with another good win. Plenty of good players led by Hansen and Nicholson who were also amongst the goals. Nick Fyfleid also booting 3. Pleasing to see some established senior players prominent and running into some form.

Thirds
A bright opening but once again a lack of fitness showed as we were overrun in the second half. Starting to get some continuity and numbers looking pretty good. A win not far away.

Club 18
The long trek to the hostile surrounds of the snake pit. A close game all day and we led at the half but wasted the wind in the third quarter. The home side made us pay and ran away to a comfortable win in the last quarter. The familiar names of Browning and Oakley the best once again.

19 Blues
A brilliant start with 7 goals on the board by quarter time. From there it was a bit of a grind, not helped by ordinary finishing which included 3 goals 11 in the last quarter. Overall a solid team effort. Will Kanz and Jack Gava the best with Joel Stewart kicking 3 goals.

A tight game from start to finish. Never more than a few goals in it but Beaumaris seemed to hold the advantage most of the day, eventually getting the result by 16 points. Arran Wheatley outstanding with B.O.G honours and 5 goals.
