2012 U19 Premiership coach Michael Brown has stepped down as the Blues coach for 2013. Mick will still be the club’s fitness coordinator working with Greg and the seniors and is also involved in recruitment and player development. Mick has made an outstanding contribution to the U19’s and the club as a whole over the last two seasons. His success is well deserved and we are grateful to still have him as part of the club.
Fortunately we did not have to look far to find a suitable replacement. The club is pleased to announce the appointment of Simon ‘ Plugger ‘ Brown as U19 Blues coach for 2013.
Simon is of course Mick’s younger brother and the third of the four Brown boys to play for the club. Simon has been an integral part of our U19 program for several years as a highly successful assistant to Mick over the last two seasons and prior to that as Rob Smith’s assistant with the Golds.
While our record at U19 Premier level is well known, one of our finest moments in U19 football came in the 2008 season in the South Division when the Golds came from fourth place to defeat the previously unbeaten Monash Blues in an epic grand final. It was the first time ever that a clubs second Under 19 team had managed to win a flag, a feat that has only been repeated once by Old Xavs in 2011. (This demonstrates the extraordinary effort of this years 19 Golds in making the Grand Final). Simon was a major part of that success.
Simon coached the Blues in his own right for several games mid season when Mick was overseas and produced a perfect ‘6 from 6’ record. We look forward to seeing Simon continue to develop as a coach and wish him all the best.
