Seniors
Since arriving in Premier division in 2011 Old Carey have the wood on us with our only victory in four previous encounters being a big win at home early last season. The hopes of putting a near full strength team on the park evaporated with a number of late withdrawals but we were still confident of a good showing at home. There was a howling breeze blowing straight into the scoreboard pocket, which would make attractive football impossible, and the match was pretty much a grind from start to finish.
Kicking with the breeze Carey had a goal on the board in the opening minute but the game tightened up after that. We started to control the play and when Pickett landed one into the breeze we went into quarter time well satisfied to be trailing by just 8 points.
With the breeze at our backs in the second we looked like taking control but a failure to nail a number of gettable set shots prevented us from building a match winning lead. 3 goals 4 was not adequate reward for our dominance. Our defence was right on top keeping the opposition scoreless for the quarter and despite not putting them away we had a handy 22 point lead at half time.
With Carey taking their turn with the breeze in the 3rd we looked to be comfortably holding them at bay. However the momentum shifted about half way through the quarter as they worked there way back in to the contest. For a time we could not get our hands on the footy and some late goals to the Panthers cut the lead to just 3 points at the last change. While the breeze had abated slightly we still held the advantage. It was Carey who started the better and an early goal saw them take the lead for the first time since early in the second. We replied immediately and in the next 15 minutes had multiple opportunities to close it out. We could not land the killer blow with our poor conversion keeping Carey in the game. They made us pay and regained the lead and as the clock ticked over 20 minutes we still trailed by a point. A couple of match wining efforts from Seb Gotch wrestled back the momentum. A searching run though the middle found Roberts who kicked truly to regain the lead and when he goaled form a nice snap soon after and we looked home. In the end a less than convincing 11 point victory.
Full credit to the opposition. A few times we looked like breaking it open but a subtle change of game plan in the second half got them back into the match. It took some terrific efforts to get us over the line. Ben Humphrey was outstanding all around the ground with Pickett and Lowe continuing their exceptional 2013 form. Mid fielders Vickers and Semmel found plenty of the ball while under 19 graduate Mick Stizza continued his impressive debut season.
Next week we travel to Beaumaris to take on the only other undefeated team. The odds of Beaumaris and De La Salle having match of the day status and a top of the table clash after round 3 would have been very long indeed. The Sharks have been outstanding this year and a very tough encounter is assured at a venue we are unfamiliar with.

Reserves
After two close defeats it was good to get on the board with a comprehensive win. After a wasteful 3.10 in the first quarter we played some great footy running into the gale during the second and had the game in our keeping by half time. Lachy Bull and Hugh Nicholson strengthened claims for a senior berth again putting in strong performances. Club legend Peter Harrison was very good in his 250th game with ‘Sticks’ McArdle slotting 4 goals.

Thirds
Injuries through the club really impacting this week. What looked a strong team on Thursday was decidedly shaky by Saturday morning. Things went from bad to worse during the game with further injuries leaving us very depleted. With no bench for the second half we were overrun by a pretty slick outfit. Aaron Kneebone and Ed Espinosa the best with Steve Hogan booting 3 goals.

19 Blues
Defeats in the last 8 years have been such a rare occurrence that we get a bit of a shock when it does happen. No one can remember the last time Scotch beat De La at U19 level but they certainly deserved their victory today. We actually led by a goal at half time but were over run, eventually going down by 40 points. Matt Hogan with 3 goals led the scorers and Charlie Haley named as the best player.

Rounding off an ordinary day for our 19s an undermanned Golds team was comprehensively beaten by a well-drilled Oakleigh. Arran Hay and Ben Cranage the best with Will Agar kicking 2 of the 3 goals.
