We welcome the eldest of the Brown clan, Stephen, who has been appointed coach of the Thirds for 2013. Steve joins brothers Simon, who is the new 19 Blues coach and Michael, the retiring Blues coach and current club fitness coordinator as part of the team for 2013
The structure and viability of the Thirds is very important for our club moving forward. Unquestionably a club with our depth and strength would have reasonably expected to field a strong Thirds team capable of playing finals. Rather we had to scratch around for players most weeks and they received little by way of match day help with volunteers very thin on the ground. The consequence was that far too many talented players missed playing finals due to the strength and player availability during our Reserves finals campaign.
Developing our capability both on and off the field is seen as priority for next season. With a number of quality U19s graduating to senior ranks we see this an opportunity to really develop our Thirds with a view to providing a strong pathway to senior football.
The club is indebted to Liam O’Donnell for his efforts over the last 3 seasons in often difficult and trying circumstances. He achieved a grand final in 2010 and finals in 2011. He has had to take on far more than what a coach should and his efforts in keeping the team going in 2012 should be acknowledged. Liam has flagged an intention to pull on the boots again in 2013 and will remain on board as an assistant coach.
Stay tuned for more news on the 2013 Thirds structure from the VAFA and the club.
