The TAC Cup bye weekend saw a number of trial games held to start the selection process for the AFL National Under 18 Championship Victoria Metropolitan and Victorian Country teams.
A total of eight Stingrays players are in the initial Under 18 squads of 55 players. These squads will be reduced to 40 after the weekends games and this weekends TAC Cup round for a further trial match in two weeks. The squad will then be trimmed to the 30 that play in the expanded Under 18 Nationals competition.
The expanded competition has the all Division two teams playing against Division one teams. The Division two teams are Queensland, Tasmania, NSW and Northern Territory. The Queensland team is the Gold Coast team that plays weekly in the TAC Cup. The other three Division two teams also play invitational games in the TAC Cup with the Stingrays hosting Northern Territory this Saturday at Shepley Oval Dandenong at 11.00am.
The eight Stingrays were Tom Scully playing with Vic Metro and Ryan Bastinac, Corey Millard, James Hallahan, Myles Pitt, Mitch Hallahan, Matthew Shaw and Madison Andrews all representing Vic Country.
Another six bottom age players from the Stingrays squad played a practice match against the Vic Metro Under 17's and would have benefited immensely from the experience of playing against some of the best players in Victoria. Andrew McInnes, Matt Lee, Daniel Harrison, Mitch Gent, Tom Curren and Luke Parker all acquitted themselves well against very talented opposition.
