The Western Jets have suffered their second consecutive defeat, this time by 3 points to the Dandenong Stingrays at Shepley Oval on Sunday.
Conditions weren’t great for football with a strong breeze blowing strongly down the ground. The Stingrays won the toss and chose to kick with the breeze but were unable to take advantage of what seemed to be a 4-5 goal wind. After kicking a late goal the Stingrays went into the first break with an 8 point lead.
The Jets were hoping they would be able to take full advantage of the breeze, but they too were unable to capitalise only outscoring the Stingrays by 2 points to go into half time with a 6 point deficit.
The third quarter isn’t called the premiership quarter for nothing and this was the quarter the Jets should have taken the advantage. To continue the trend for the day, the team kicking against the breeze dominated the play. The Jets had the ball in their half for most of the quarter but only managed 6 behinds, 3 of those from within 25m, while the stingrays managed 1.3 with their rare forays forward. By 3 quarter time they were 9 points up.
The Stingrays kicked the first of the last and looked to be home considering the trouble the two teams had scoring with the breeze but the Jets rallied. Through big last quarter efforts from Fitzpatrick and Post who had been the Jets best all day, they kept coming at the Stingrays. Despite 2 shots late in the game the Jets weren’t quite able to get the chocolates and went down by 3 points.
The Jets need to try and get back on the winners list with their next game against Sandringham at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday at 10:45am.
