EASTERN Ranges midfielder Olivia Flanagan wrote herself into the history books at Box Hill, slotting the Hawks’ first goal in the VFL Women’s competition.
After Box Hill went goalless in its Round 1 game against Geelong, Flanagan kicked the Hawks first major in Round 2 VU Western Spurs.
The 18-year-old midfielder kicked the goal after taking a mark at the top of the goalsquare, slotting it from point blank range.
“It was amazing, it is something I never thought would happen,” Flanagan said.
“It was a dream come true.”
Flanagan was a star performer for Eastern Ranges throughout the TAC Cup Girls competition, finishing third in the club’s best-and-fairest count on 28 votes.
However, Flanagan said the transition to the VFL Women’s competition had been difficult.
“It is a lot harder, all the other players are all a bit ahead of me because they have been together for so long,” Flanagan said.
“I’m picking up things as we go.”
The Chirnside Park product said coming up against more mature and physically-hardened bodies and spreading from contests in the VFL Women’s competition had been the biggest challenge compared to playing in the TAC Cup Girls.
“I’ve learnt a lot more from just being at club level,” she said.
“I just want to play as many games as possible.”
