EASTERN Ranges’ under-16s withstood a final quarter surge from Sandringham Dragons on Tuesday to record a one-point at Rams Arena.
Ranges led by 34 points at the final change, only for the Dragons to kick six unanswered goals in the last term.
Ranges were restricted to just three behinds after three-quarter time but managed to hold on for a 11.6 (72) to 10.11 (71) win.
An even first half saw both sides trade blows until the Ranges scored six goals to three behinds in the third term to put a break on the scoreboard.
“They played as good as footy they could play, it was outstanding and it was our brand,” coach Mark Fisher said.
However, some confusion reigned as to the final result.
The scoreboard showed Sandringham led by a point in the final stages until a Ranges behind tied the scores before the final siren, with both sides on 71 a piece.
However, the final result gave the Ranges a one-point victory, with the umpires confirming the scores after the game.
“It was a good result for the boys because they have worked pretty hard since November,” Fisher said.
“If they do what is asked of them, they’ll play good footy.”
Fisher said there were glimpses of what may be to come in future TAC Cup years.
“It was really encouraging looking forward to their top-age TAC (Cup) year in 2019,” he said.
“It was a really good insight as to what they might be able to do in a couple of years.”
Fraser Smith finished with four goals to be among the best players, while Tyler Edwards impressed with his work in close, Kurtis Flakemore gave drive on the wings and Jamieson Rossiter provided a presence on the ball and up forward.
The Ranges will play Northern Knights at Bayswater Oval on Tuesday.
