Sam Weideman was the third and final Eastern Ranges player from the 2015 NAB AFL Draft to make his debut on the weekend, following in the footsteps of Ryan Clarke and Blake Hardwick.
Thrown into the deep end first up as Melbourne took on reigning premier Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, Weideman shone up forward kicking two goals. This included a major with his very first AFL kick, which puts him in an exclusive club with the likes of Patrick Dangerfield, Scott Pendlebury and Trent Cotchin.
After dominating at VFL level this season, where he has kicked an impressive 19 goals from 15 games, Weideman did not let his chance at the top level go to waste taking three marks to go with his 13 disposals playing as a tall forward. The extremely talented footballer, who was taken at pick nine in last year’s draft, will likely get more opportunities at AFL level over the final three weeks of the home and away season, and will push his case for a permanent senior position in 2017.
Well done Sam.
